Do I have to break in a new engine?

I just bought a new car, Honda Accord if that makes any difference. I am not sure if I need to break in the engine like in the old days.

The salesman tells me to go with the oil minder on the dashboard. Should I change the oil at 500 or 1,000 miles to be extra safe? Can't hurt right?

I don't do much drag racing, as you might have guessed given that I bought an Accord. Do I have to drive like a little old lady or can I drive normally? You know five or ten miles over the limit?

Thanks for all help.

The longer you drive 'carefully' the better. The most damage is done in the first 30 seconds, so let the engine idle for that long and then smoothly go. Honda's are pretty bullet proof, but an oil flush and change at 1,000 miles then every 6,000 or one year whichever comes first will be good. Add some fule tretment via fuel tank every 6,000 miles too and it'll probably never let you down. happy driving

There may nor may not be a need to change your oil after the first 500 or 1000 miles on a new engine, but considering an oil change is $20 (or $10 DIY), it's cheap insurance.

first one thousand miles stay under 50 second one thousand stay under 55 and then change the oil and filter ok.. there is a break in oil installed and not for heavyduty use.

  • drive it like you would everyday. that way you do not develop a carbon ring below a point and later shatter rings due to that ring making contact at higher rpm. this is a situation that only takes place at extreme levels, like buying grandpas car then racing it home on the freeway at 90mph.
