Diaper Genies??
I have a problem, my family keeps yelling at me telling me I need to get a diaper genie, I don't want one, I think they are nasty. I plan on getting the scented bags and putting the dirty diaper in there and then my hubby takes the trash out every night (which he already does) What is wrong with my plan?? I just think it is nasty leaving poopie diapers in a trash bag for a week or more and then you whole house smells like rotting diapers. Am I crazy???
My sister is going nuts with it (she doesn't have kids) and says my house will always smell bad and such, she made me cry because she just wouldn't leave me alone! I'm pretty sure she is going to buy me one for my shower, and I DO NOT WANT ONE!!! Would it be rude to take it back??

I agree with you!!! I went through both a Diaper Genie and a Diaper Champ and both were a complete waste of $. HATED both of them for various reasons that I won't get into, but the most obvious being the stinky diapers sit in the nursery for days. Yuck! I too bought the scented bags and just put the nappies in the garbage. Stick to your guns honey!

You don't want one nor do you need one but I don't know about the scented trash bags either we used those and they didn't work, we have a stick-up inside the lid of the pail and that seems to work the best of anything, and I wash the pail out with bleach once a week.
With your husband taking out the trash every evening there is no sense in wasting your money on the diaper genie.
What we do is we have a screened in porch where I have a regular diaper pail with a lid and we put the diapers in that and then dump it before we go to bed for the night and have been doing this since my oldest son was born and this works just fine for us.
If you don't want one and feel it is unnecessary to have one then tell your family that it is your decision and that is what you and your husband have decided on and they have nothing to say about it.

No you are not crazy, if you don't want one and have expressed this to the individual who insist on purchasing one for you. Imo, you have every right to return it and get something you would use.
I had one with my first son, and I stopped using it after a couple of months, it was more of a hassle. It was easier to wrap the dirty diapers in shopping bags and throw it in the regular trash, which was emptied daily or in extreme circumstances, immediately. Now with our second son, we have a trash shoot steps away from the door, so a diaper genie would be useless.

I have one and I've got to tell you, it's not that great. I only have one because I live in a multi building and my bin shute doesn't work, and when you have a young baby you can't exactly be going up and down the lift with every poopy bum that comes your way. So I bought one, thinking it would be easier and help with the smell and things. And it does, a bit, until you open the thing up to empty it and you get the smell of 4 day old poop! I would rather just put the things down the shute, however, as i said, my shute doesn't work. If your hubby takes the trash out every night, then that's fine. Although I've also got to say, sented bags don't do much when the baby starts to poop really poopy poops! (When they're first born, they don't smell! Amazing!) So if they poop in the morning, and you have to wait all day for your hubby to get home to take the trash out, you may have a poopy smelling house anyway! My advice, double up bags (sented ones I suppose!) and put them in the trash and get your hubby to take the trash out ASAP! But he can't forget, otherwise you'll wake up in the morning with the stale smell of poop in your kitchen!
Tell her you don't want one, and that even if you did, it's your house, you're kitchen, you're trash, your baby, you're poop to deal with. WHY she is so interested is a mistery!

I like my diaper genie I have in the bathroom not in the rooms so that might help a bit. I've been using it for a week since my baby was born and I can tell you I cant smell a thing. Maybe is different for older baby's and my newborns poop isn't as smelly as an older baby. I have diaper genie II with scented bag.

OK, well I personally think that diaper genies are a waste of money! What I do (as recommended by my daycare provider aka Grandma): I have a 5 gallon bucket lined with a trash bag and sealed with the lid sitting in my garage (grandma has her's outside). This way, when you have a dirty diaper, just put it in the bucket and seal the lid. This is wonderful! I have NEVER had a problem with odor. Just for added security I have those stick-up air freshners, one right by the bucket and one inside the bucket. This is a lot cheaper and works better in my opinion.

LOL
I liked it both ways. However, I did notice the babys room smelled less with the diaper genie, but thats because I dont take it out every night like your husband does. You dont have to let the diapers sit in the diaper genie for a week though, you can empty it as often as you like.
But if what you are doing works fine for you, then keep on doing it.

You do not want a diaper genie. You have to buy special bags for it. If you want anything I get a diaper champ, it uses regular trash bags. And they all have air freshers or whatever in them. They don't make you house smell, ours never did.
We had two diaper champs with my twins, one in their room, and one down stairs. Well with my niece I kept the one upstairs. But downstairs I just put them in a plastic grocery bag and put it out in the garage in the trash cans.

No! You're not crazy. I refused to get a diaper genie for that very reason. Who wants 5-day old poop in their nursery? Ewwww! :o)
I too use scented bags. Ruffies- Vanilla scented from Kmart. 80 bags costs less than 2 bucks, and hubby empties garbage at night.

I don't know, I have a diaper genie II, and my nursery doesn't smell like poop -except when I'm changing a poop diaper. To each his own though. I also couldn't go 5 days without bringing the bag outside because my daughter pees/poops quite a bit.
