Daughter has excruciatingly thick long hair--in tangles???!!!?

My six-year-old daughter has the thickest hair, and it's all the way down to her waist. It is virtually impossible to straighten out. We braid it to avoid these problems, but she is an avid swimmer and sometimes her hair ties fall out...which means hours brushing it. Can ANYONE recommend a shampoo/conditioner combination that WORKS, regardless of what it costs? I hate to see her in tears trying to keep her hair beautiful (by "her" I mean my daughter AND my wife!).

You need a very thick, moisturizing conditioner. I would suggest using Nexxus products, Therappe shampoo and Humectress conditioner. The conditioner can do double duty and act as a leave-in conditioner also. After putting the conditoner into her hair, have her comb the conditioner through her hair with a wide tooth comb, then rinse. Blot the hair dry, don't scrub the hair that causes tangles. If your wife thinks she needs extra conditioning for further combing, have her add a nickel size drop of conditioner on the ends only (like half way up the hair shaft) to aid combing. Keeping the dry, split ends trimmed will also help keep her hair from tangling so bad. The Nexxus products can be purchased at a drug store.

If you have a styling salon near you that carries Phillip Pelusi products, I would highly recommend his products. They are expensive, but they work really, really well.

Additional - my daughter has really thick hair also and used to wear it very long. Our stylist would thin her hair and it would make it much more manageable. She would thin so much hair out that the floor looked like there was enough hair for 2 people laying there! My daughter finally got tired of long hair, had it cut really short and gave the cut hair to Locks of Love.

I say use ordinary heavy coniditoner for dry hair then wash out.

Then try Aussie Luscious Long Leave in Conditioner (although there are plenty of other brands that do leave-in conditioner). You spray it on after the hair is washed and you can aim it right at the tangles. Use as much as you need to make it easy to comb through. Also I like Garnier Fructis shampoos and conditioners for dry hair.

Grease her hair before she swims with a heavy conditioner

Use a wide toothed brush with a cushioned base (for flexibility so it gives when it meets a tangle) when brushing out tangles and remember to start at the bottom of the hair and work your way up.

Use only very thick fabric hair ties or scrunchies, not the "rubber band" type.

Get long layers cut into her hair and keep it trimmed regularly. This will rid you of most of the damaged hair which is the worst for tangling. You can still plait it.

Good luck, I was just the same as a kid, except my hair was always full of twigs!

i would bet you a thousand dollars that my hair is thicker than hers. the product that i use is pretty expensive, but it is the best ever! aveda smooth infusion shampoo and conditioner. use the conditioner as a leave in when you comb or brush her hair. use a wide tooth comb and comb her hair from the ends first. i am an avid swimmer. been swimming since for ever. i wash my hair everyday and condition every day with this stuff. it works. i know this will help. best wishes. oh yeah, they also make a detox especially for us swimmers. get that too. the products are only sold in the aveda stores. they are 100% plant ingredients thats why they cost so much and work so well. pick up a bottle for me too!

I too had a think hair but now it reduced a bit ! Apply oil to your hair regularly. Use the shampoos as per the instructions given and don't forget to use conditioner with them. Purchase some hair massaging oil and try to give your hair a cool massage or just visit some spa's near you. Trim your hair regularly as it is also like nails which will be growing as you cut. Eat more and more because hair is just the dead cell outgrowth of your body. So the more you eat the more dead cell will be removed from your body quick. Change your diet plans and add more and more protein to your food. Dont over stand under the direct rays of sun. If you have your granny near you, its the best gift for your hair . Ask your granny about your hair problem and try to fix it :)

Well, if it's as long as her waist you might want to cut off a couple of inches to avoid tangles on the ends. You HAVE to brush your daughters hair! Brush it once to rid of all the tangles then use L'oreal Kids Shampoo and Conditioner everyday to reduce tangles. You can buy it at Target and pretty much any drugstore. Also, brush or comb her hair EVERYDAY to avoid daily tangles! Hope this helps :)

For starters, cut it shorter!! The longer it is, the harder it will be to manage. I would also look at the hair ties you are using. The smaller rubber band type ones work better, just make sure you put them in tight.

You can also have her hair thinned out when you get it cut. But good conditioning, a detangling spray and regular maintenance can help aleviate some of the problems.

Before you wash her hair, brush it out, if possible [if not, spray with detangler and water, brush

Use a detangling, 2-in-1 or conditioning shampoo. These detangle hair [Luster's PCJ Pretty n' Silky Conditioning Shampoo works]

Leave conditioner in for 3-5 mins, 8 for dry hair. Comb thoroughly

Rinse with cold water and comb

    Spray with detangler

    Apply leave-in conditoner

how about cutting about like 5 inches off? (that way it's still long) and get layers to thin down the hair? get layers in the back. idk i just use herbal essence. try pantene conditioner. The Aveda Rosemary shampoo and conditioner is really good too. Google "good shampoo and conditioner that gets out tangles" this might work.
