Why won't my Windows update icon go away?

I have my computer set up for automatic updates. I've installed the same update several times, then restarted my machine, but the icon for the update comes back soon after, telling me the same update needs to be installed.

I'm using Windows 2000 with Avira and Spywarestop running, but I don't think the conflict is there. Serious, detailed answers only, please....

Windows 2000: Their still updating that?

What sounds like is happening is that your version of Windows appears to be reaching for the updates for newer versions: XP and Vista.

Try unsetting yourself up for automatic updates (turn off automatic updates), restart your computer. See if the icon is still there. If not, click on search for updates (not sure if its called that or not on 2000, dont remember its been a long time), and see what updates if any come through. If nothing comes through, then I wouldn't worry about the update icon not going away, its probably doing what I mentioned above.

BTW: What is the update called that is coming through?

I'd say double click on the icon again, there just may be more updates coming.

Stop everything else running and just let the updates install.

Did you go to Windows update site itself and check what has and hasn't installed sucessfully on your system ??

I have never had conflict. Although i never had Win 2000. I thought support ceased now. I know XP support ceases soon.

sometimes, if you havent updated for a long time, there will be many many many updates, so just keep on doing it until there are no more
