1995 MTD Lawn Tractor Drivetrain Problem?

I have a 1995 MTD lawn tractor that, on occasion, refuses to move. The tractor will be merrily rolling along and then it will slowly but surely came to a halt. When it does this, the motor does not bog down in the least. It does not make any weird noises. It just stops! It will do this with or without the blades running. I have changed the drive belt and the clutch tensioner spring with some short term results, but the problem comes back eventually. Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!

Sounds like something is wearing the drive belt. It could be an alignment issue. Is the belt being worn? You should be able to tell by measuring the width of the belt. Or compare it to a new one. I would look for one of the pulleys being out of alginment or bent. Are you sure that the belt is being put on correctly? Or maybe you are getting poor quality belts. You also didn't mention if this is a manual or auto transmission. Are you certain that the belts your using are the correct length and width?

Your description of the problem leads to more questions. Does the engine rpm change or just the speed of the tractor? If it is the engine, I would look at a fuel issue. This could be a filter or a dirty carburetor. If the engine rpms remain constant and the tractor speed changes I would look first at the drive belt. Normally if the transaxle is the issue there will be some noise with it and it will be jerky and sudden. A little more information would help us help you.

My husband has one. I wish he had never seen that thing. He doesn't use it, anymore. He has a John Deere, that is probably 30 years old. He bought that MTD Ranch King, the 3rd time he mowed with it, it flew into a higher gear, threw him against a pine tree, and broke his pelvis. A friend had one, he was mowing, turned it off and went inside to have lunch, looked out and the thing was on fire. Best thing that ever happened to him. I'm suprised that yours is still even running. Take my advice, get rid of it.
