Router connected by long phone cable?

I just got a netgear modem router for my talktalk broadband. The internet cable (RJ11) goes from my living rooms telephone socket all the way up the stairs to my bedroom.

With the cable being that long would it effect the speed at all? I do have a shorter cable but the router would have to be right next to the phone socket but i'd rather have it upstairs.

this make sense?

Yes it would. The longer a cable is, the resistance is more and speed and performance rapidly drop off. You would be better off with a wireless connection from the modem and your computer.

You would need to be sure that the netgear router has wireless capabilities if you were going to use wireless(it will have 1 or more little aerials about 3 inchs long) if the DSL light on the router is remaining on without flickering your connection is fine this DSL light can be effected by long and/or tangled cables(RJ11).....Good Luck

It should'nt have an effect on the connection. My brother has a 50ft cable running into his room for his xbox 360 and he has a full connection when playing on xbox live. The cable might be defective.

The best way is change that cable to extension phone cabel and at the end of the extension connect your filter and then your router. Because from the filter to the router must be 2-3 meters.

probably not much but if you have a router why don't you connect up wirelessly? That is the whole point of having a router rather than a modem

No ! it is a minuscule length compared to the cable that is layed from the exchange to your house

I shortened my cable from about 10 feet to about two. No difference at all.

there is some slow down the longer the cable is due to resistance but ya should hardly notice any slow down
