Two bar tariffs- is it legal?

I was recently in the Central bar/pub in Newquay and they asked me to confirm that I was a local (obviously assuming I was). The prices were cheaper for the locals.

I would imagine their displayed tariff was the more expensive one.

Surely this can't be legal in the UK.?

Our local pub does that too.. but doesn't ask if the persons local.. they just give the cheaper prices if they know they are!

I think its unfair my self!
