Are there still any states that require a social security number to buy a fishing license?

What happens if you "accidently" make an error entering your SS number? Does the system match the name and SS number and deny a license if there is no match?

What if you are not from the US and do not have an SS number? For instance can I become a Canadian to buy an out of state fishing license without compromising my SS number?

Are you committing identity theft if you "accidently" and unknowingly enter someone else's SS number on a fishing license application?

Do the convicts in your state prison system have access to your SS number after you buy a fishing license and your SS number then becomes part of your state's public record?

If your driver's license number is your SS number or tied to it does it make your SS number part of the public record and therefore accessible to the public when you buy a fishing license?

Please tell me/us what you know about the SS number issues in your state when I/we buy a fishing license in your state. Am I compromising my SS number?

Update:

I understand about Texas. I only need to give my drivers license number for a fishing license here but it is directly tied to the SS number so they get it that way. I am most curious about other states that I visit for fishing like Colorado, Montana, New Mexico etc. and how the what ifs I listed apply in those states especially the ramifications about making a "mistake" entering my SS number or becoming a Canadian for a day.

Update 2:

Joe. Indiana is civilized. But I'd bet your DL number is tied to your SS number like here in TX. Do you know? Or maybe you Indianians rebelled against the SS number tyrany and did away with it.

Update 3:

Prison convicts are often used to process or crunch data for a state. They may do it in your state too. They did it here in Texas for a long time until the people rebelled against it.

Update 4:

By "Canadian for a day" I mean that they do not have SS numbers so when they buy a US fishing license they are not subject to our SS number tyranny.

Exert, there is merit in the efforts to locate deadbeat dads via licensing applications. We have a former son-in-law who is one of those scoundrels. I object to subjecting the rest of us to the risk ofidentity theft and additional SS number tyranny to find them.

Update 5:

Exert - I had forgotten about the 4 digit thing in NM and I was just there in April to fish Cow Creek (near the Pecos). Gawd I wish the wind would settle down here in TX so I could do some fishing here. What a windy spring.

the state of Indiana does not require that you give you SS number to purchase a fishing license or a huning license also our drivers license does not have our SS number on it.....they do ask for it when you apply for a drivers license but do not put it on the license........I see no reason why a convict should have access to you SS number

now according the above poster it is federal law......well it may well be now as I have not purchased my licemse for this year yet........but my drivers license does not have my SS number on it

I just checked Indiana's DNR website and it states you must supply a SS number or a drivers License number to get a fishing or hunting license......so since my drivers license does not have my SS number on it I do not have to give my SS number to get a license but they can get it if they need it for any reason by checking with the state drivers license division

I don't understand what you mean by Canadian for a day but when I went to Canada twice to fish and bear hunt all I had to do was show my drivers license.........yes they can get my SS number from the drivers license division but they would have to call them as my SS number is not on my drivers license

as to my state using convicts to process things......I really don't know........our fishing and hunting licenses are issued by computer printouts at any place of business that sells them

Social Security Numbers Required by Law: The collection of the Social Security Number is mandated by the Federal Government. TPWD (TX Parks & Wildlife Dept.) has no option but to comply with Federal Law and collect the numbers from the purchasers of licenses. TPWD cannot force you to provide your social security number; however, under Federal Statute, we cannot sell you a license. Your social security number is required to be collected, regardless of age, for the purpose of child support collection enforcement under Federal Statute 42 U.S.C.A. 666 and Texas Family Code, Section 231.302. If you are buying a license for another person, the law requires that the purchaser provide the social security number of the person who will be holding the license.

Sorry I have no idea how to address your "what ifs".

*Added* I think therefore you should be safe from both tyranny and ID theft while fishing NM as their license requires only the last four digits of SS#, however there is space for a drivers license number (if applicable, after all, NM does have one of the highest DWI revocation rates).

On another note, I find myself being in a compromising position everytime I pull up to a gas station or to buy a gallon of milk...so in the end one is already compromised. Wasn't it John Donne who stated "No man is an island entire unto himself"...or was that Gilligan's Island(?). Are we all not part of the string of life? [I had no idea this would turn into a philosophical answer, really]
