Lawn Care Watering At Night?

Ok so my neighbor comes over tonight and tells the wife "I don't want to be rude but did you know watering your grass at night will cause fungus, mold and rot you lawn" Huh ok I did a research on this and some say that watering at night can cause mold etc well here is my question!

If it rains several times during the month all night or when it's dark it rains so your lawn is now wet all night Huh! ok so the rain doesn't cause it to rot, mold etc but watering late in the evening will ...

Anyone else see something wrong with this picture. How in the BLANK does the rain not cause the same thing your telling me I will cause by watering late in the evening. I'm no expert but if you going to chime in on this I would like a real answer as to why the rain doesn't cause the same problems.

I guess under certain circumstance a plausible thought.

On all the systems I have installed I run the zones in 2 steps. After the sun starts to go down they run for 10-15 min, this helps cool the lawn and some saturation.I then have zones run about 2-3 am for 15-20 min for good saturation.

Doing in stages I feel helps eliminate water waste, less running down the street.

This has worked well for me.As for the diseases?.Good upkeep helps but any of them can get sick.

    Good Luck

    Watering At Night

The difference between watering at night and raining during the night is this... During warm weather it doesn't cool off at night like it does during the rainy seasons. The warm, damp conditions in your lawn make it easier for mold and rot to set in in your lawn. It doesn't mean you will definitely get mold or rot, but the chances are higher, especially if you are doing it every night. The best time to water (according to the pros) is in the early morning, just before or at sunrise.

By the way, watering for 4 hours everyday (as a previous poster said) is totally unneccessary and wasteful, no matter where you live or whether you have new seedlings. I am sure those people are running a river down their street every day.

You're neighbor is absolutely right. However in order for the fungus to start growing the lawn has to be wet for multiple days. But when you are watering in the morning the grass has time to dry out throughout the day. As I said before the lawn has to be wet at night for multiple days so that is why you don't get fungus after one rainstorm. However many fungus thrive during cool wet and rainy periods because the grass is always wet.

I think your neighbor is all wet. When my father first put in a new lawn and it was just getting a good start, the city put out a sprinkling band. He'd get up at 2AM and go out there and do his watering. His lawn didn't die, get mold or rot, but grew to be beautiful. Water when you want to.

lol dude we have said the same freakin thing..we water our grass at 3 in the morning till around 7 ..you want the water to have time to seep into the ground before it burns off in the light of day..our sprinklers are on a timer...you can get them at lowes..they are the greatest..we dont have to worry it gets watered every night/morning..the neighbor on the other side of the street waters..for days at a time in the same spot..what they hell they are growing im not sure...their yard is established where as ours has just been planted from seed...
