There is a call for everyone to "home-compost" but ..?
surely if everyone were to "home-compost" the combined gases created would be the same as those at a landfill site ? So what is the point, bar reducing the waste taken to these sites ?

Assuming that people who compost are people who would normally buy compost for their garden from a garden centre, then composting at home helps to protect the natural resources from which most composts are produced. The classic example is the conservation of peat bogs.
Other savings:
- transport of resource to manufacturer
- packaging of product (typically plastic)
- transport of product to wholesaler
- transport of product to retailer
- transport of product to home

You get free compost and save save you paying for the rubbish charge and stops the CO2 of the truck going to the dump. I dont think it gives off as much gases as the landfill.

Well, reducing waste is the main goal. You also get free fertilizer. If you have a garden, you can use the compost for enriching the soil.

Everyone should home compost, and if you havn't got a garden, give the compost to someone who has!
