I don't know what to do with myself?

I was diagnosed with depression 4 years ago, and have been on medication since then. Also been seeing a psychiatrist off and on and have had a few sessions with a psychologist. It took a while to find a medication that worked, but two years ago I noticed a huge difference when I started taking Venlafaxine. I'm currently on the maximum dose. Just as a bit of background info.

Recently things have started getting pretty bad again. Right now I feel absolutely terrible, I'm not actively suicidal but I would rather be dead than alive, and I'd love to just go to sleep and never wake up. I have no idea why I feel like this, I have no reason to - I've got a good job, enough money, and this week I've passed my driving test and had an offer accepted on a house........so I should be happy, but I just feel SO crap. I can't even put it into words how bad I feel. I want to cry but I can't, and there's no point anyway. I don't know what to do.

Update:

I'm 26. And the depression started before I was started on antidepressants, otherwise I wouldn't have been started on them. I know a lot of people are against medications, but I'm not, and I don't want to come off them. I was on the verge of suicide when I started taking Venlafaxine and it made me feel so much better. I don't believe that herbal remedies work, and wouldn't take them.

Hey! First, it's great that you're asking for direction. You don't have to have answers, just the motivation to seek direction. I don't personally struggle with depression, but my daughter does. There doesn't have to be a cause for why you feel bad. You just do. If you had diabetes or heart disease or the flu you'd get treatment, and this is no different. You need the right care to feel better. Contact your prescribing physician right away, and let them know that your med isn't doing it's job and how you're feeling. Meds effectiveness sometimes diminishes over time. I know it's frustrating...like playing tiddly-winks with your head :) But they need to know what's going on so they can adjust your dose or try a new med. And then contact your councilor and get back into regular sessions. You need a plan for coping with these "down times." With the right med and counseling you'll feel better. Really, I hope you get feeling better, soon. Best wishes.

I'm so sorry you are having such a bad time. I was depressed about 3 years ago and I know the feeling of wanting to never wake up again. I can't give you any real medical advice, only suggestions from personal experience. I would try to find someone new...I had great success with a therapist who sent me to a doctor only to get my medicine. I did 2 years of talk therapy which helped more than anything.

Also, my mother has been on antidepressants for years and sometimes it feels like the medicine stops working. Her doctor told her that the body can become immune to the medicine making it stop working. You might need to find something new.

I wish you the best of luck and please contact me if you would like to talk. I know what this feels like.

First thing I would do is get back into the psychiatrist. Second thing i would do is re-evaluate your life. You say you should be happy because you have a good job and a new house, but there is no rule out there that says these things bring happiness. Obviously, for you, they don't, so you need to get out there and find out what does. Take some time off work. Get out of our house, go for some long walks. Do some soul searching and try to find out what will make you happy. Try to find something that will bring some meaning to your life. That will give you a sense of purpose.

We are not put on this earth to be miserable creatures that count the seconds till our death. We are here to leave our mark, to enjoy ourselves and to learn something new every day. The earth has been going on for millions of years, and all we have to do is get through 80 of them. Then we can sleep for an eternity.

You may need to adjust your medication again. Although there are happy events happening they are also considered to be big changes. And often times the changes associated with these events can cause a person to feel depressed. That's normal. Thoughts of suicide are not. Contact your Dr & therapist and consider an adjustment to your medication. You also have to be aware that therapist don't hold a magic wand. You will only get out of therapy what you put into it.

Some people suffer with persistent depressive feelings no matter how well things around them seem to be going. It must be very distressing for you.

During my career in mental health nursing I met a good number of people who feel like you do. I would suggest that you need a longer course of therapy, and group therapy might be better than individual. The other possibillity is to join a self-help group- it can be very supportive to meet other people who have similar experiences and will be able to listen to you when you are struggling and feel unable to talk to 'happy' people.

    Best wishes

►Honey, what you said here you should say to your psychologist doctor ◄. It's possible that your body is too much used to the medication and it no longer works for you.

You need to change the medication for a completely different one. Effexor XR is working well. I am taking it myself but I ended up switching to the generic due to the higher cost.

Just when you start taking a new medication things will be much better for you. But make sure to talk to your doctor.

I wish you the best luck in the world.
