    total railway mileage is about 140,249.

    here is a more detailed breakdown in case you are interested

    type of rr - # of companies - miles

    CLASS 1 - 7 - 95,664

    REGIONAL - 30 - 15,388

    LOCAL - 523 - 29,197

    total = - 560 - 140,249

    class 1 railroads are your mainline, well-known railroads such as BNSF, CSX, UP, AMTK, and so on. these huge companies operate most of the national network, and bring in over 44 Billion $ / year in revenue.

    (sorry columns dont seem to line up well here)

    Indeed, U.S. rail mileage sits around 140,000 today, or 140,490 exactly (including Canadian mileage operated in the U.S.) according to the AAR (Association of American Railroads).
