How do I comfort someone whose loved one is going into a conflict zone?

My boyfriend's brother is going back to Iraq shortly, and I am in another state and helpless to do anything. Is there anything I can do or say that will help this situation at all, or can I simply be there for him and his family emotionally? Any advice, especially from those with similar issues, would be much appreciated. This is a harder thing than I have ever had to deal with, please help.

I don't think there's anything you can do other than be there for him every minute of every day. I don't mean staying at home, I mean listening to him whenever he needs to talk and doing the little things that make one happy and comfortable. He has enough stress already.

Just let him know that your thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and tell him that you are there for him whenever he might need you.
