How do I make a clarinet work?
I bought a clarinet at a yardsale. It looks to be in good condition, but I don't know how to make it work. I put all the pieces together, but when I blow in it, no sound comes out. I know nothing about instruments, can someone help me?

for one, you have to make sure you have reeds.
the mouthpeice has the opening&&then the ligature which is the metal peice that holds on the reed. you have to soak the reed for maybe 2 minutes if its new. if your just starting out&&you go to get reeds from a music store[[since i highly doubt it came with them;&&that's very unsanitary]] a good size to start with is 2&&1/2. then, you line up the reed&&tighten the ligature around it making sure the screws are too the right. then flaten your chin, put your upper lip over the top, &&tighten your ombicher[[form your mouth is in]]. blow softly&&then work your way up until you get a sound out. make sure not to hold any keys down, this note is open G. good luck, &&go to any local music store for help on anything, especially starting out :D

First of all, you need a REED to make a sound on a clarinet! On the back of your mouthpiece, which is the top part of all five of the pieces, there is an opening. You need to put a reed on there in order for you to properly blow, make a vibration, and make a sound. The reed is held onto your mouthpiece with a metal piece called a ligature. There are several different types of reeds, ligatures, and mouthpieces, but for now, get size 2 reeds and use the mouthpiece and ligature that the clarinet should have come with. I recommend Vandoren, which is a brand that many professionals use. Yes, it is more expensive than brands like Rico, but I started out with Vandoren, and I'm glad I did.
Another thing you might want to make sure of is the brand. The best brands are Buffet (their beginner models are around $500), Selmer, Yamaha, etc. I've also seen Artley being lent out at my school. You can do a Google search of "quality clarinet brands" to see where yours lines up.
If you don't know how to use your clarinet and aren't interested in private lessons, there are many options available. A local music store should have books on how to start playing the clarinet, which would include proper posture, fingering charts, care guidelines, and simple songs. You could also look up clarinet videos on Youtube or find a reliable guide online.
When going out to buy your reeds and book, get a tube of cork grease and a swab, too Cork grease is for the corks on the joints of your clarinet. If not greased regularly, they can rip! You can get them repaired, but it is better to avoid damaging them. Swabs are for getting the moisture (also known as SPIT) out of your instrument.
Since your clarinet was from a yard sale and you don't know anything about instruments, it would be best to get your clarinet cleaned and repaired. The pads, which can be found underneath the keys, might be ripped or old.
The sales associate at the music store should be able to go over some basic guidelines of your clarinet.
Good luck!

HI Sheila. Sounds like you made a great find. Don't get frustrated before you have a chance to get a sound out of the instrument. I know you are in a dilemma but make it easy on yourself. Take the clarinet to a local music store and have the repair tech take a look to see that it is in ready to play condition. If it isn't... all the blowing in the world is not going to get a sound out for you. Then go into the sales department and have them show you what accessories you will need to be able to play it. It may need a mouthpiece or ligature or the reeds that others have mentioned to you. Then ask if they will show you how to put the instrument together... and they should not mind being that you are buying accessories from them. Now.... don't expect them to give you a clarinet lesson but at least you will know more and learn by music folks... in person. If you want to take it on your own... meaning try to teach yourself (after you are able to get a sound out of the instrument) look for the study book Rubank Elementary Method for Clarinet. It includes a diagram of the clarinet and a full fingering chart. The lessons are easy to understand and take it nice and slow. Nothing that will frustrate you or that you will not be able to accomplish with about 30 minutes of practice a day. Hope that I was able to help. :)

Firstly you need a reed! Go to any music shop and ask for a size 11/2 clarinet reeds. size 2 (or above ) is too hard for a beginner! Then while you are at the music shop you might like them to have a look at it! It depends on what brand of Clarinet it is! Selmer, Yahama, Jupiter , Le blanc are all good srtudent Clarinet brands. With the reeds go for Rico or Mitchell Lurie while you start off! For the rest go to a clarinet teacher! There are lots of clarinet 'players' who don't know what they are talking about so get the music shop to recomemd a teacher in your area. You could try your band director at school as well!

there is a reason it was at a yard sale.
you need to take it to a repair shop or at least to an experienced clarinet player. without experience, nothing i can tell you about the clarinet can help you.
