Recurring leg pain since childhood. Any ideas?

Ok.

I've had pain in my legs, specifically my hips and knees since I was about 6 or so. It's a constant/sharp pain through the centre of my leg all the way to the hip, mostly occuring at night but does happen in the day too (more so now that I'm older). It's always in one leg or the other, never both at once. There's no pattern to it, I thought at one point it was because of extensive walking during the day but it happens just as much one a day I don't walk a lot.

No medicine really works. I normally just wait it out. It's not enough to stop daily activities but does hurt quite a bit, sometimes enough to keep me from walking. As a kid it would keep me up at night, crying.

When I was little my mom always said it was "growing pains" and that was it. I never got it checked out, thinking it would go away. Well now I'm 18 and it hasn't stopped.

I'm going to get it checked out at the doctors but not for a month or so.

I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what it coud be?

I had pains, too, that my mother always said were growing pains. I stopped growing (attained my full adult height of 5'4") about when I was 16, and sure enough the pains stopped. Maybe you are still growing.

Anyway, any time there is something going on with your health/body that you are concerned about, you should see a doctor if only to ease your worries. Even if it's just a mention during a regular annual well care visit.

    Childhood Leg Pain

  • 1 decade ago

I had leg pain, that I thought was a result from a bad car accident... my doctor was unable to determine if it was related to the accident. I guess I suffer a lot of the side effects at restless leg syndrome, but not enough for it to be diagnosed as that....

I was given neurontin, which my trauma doctor from the accident later took me off of because I am so young, he didn't want me on something so strong so young.

I was also given B12 injections...

I would suggest being tested to see if you have a B12 deficiency... I go once a month for injections, and my leg pain is gone.... it's kind of amazing how it works, because when need another shot, is the only time I have leg pain now...

look into that, and good luck!
