Why do strawberries have no flavor and are 3 times the size they used to be?

Have you seen them in the store? 2.99 or 3.99 per box and there are only about 10 berries in the box. These things are huge and have no flavor. They are even the same way at roadside places. They used to be small and sweet at the roadside places but now, they seem to all be the same way.

Most found in supermarkets are hybrids bred for size and color. They are picked underripe to last longer.

If you can find a local strawberry farm, go there and pick your own. Or do as I do since I am lazy, I pay a little extra for the berries that the farmers pick.

Many roadside places are either growing hybrids or buying them from someone else and re-selling.

I like using brown sugar and/or a little balsamic vinegar on mine to help bring out the flavor.

    Bon Apetit!

    Genetically altered garbage.

Read my Q I just posted on processed foods too!

When local strawberries go on sale that's when I buy them. They are still QUITE real and very tiny but taste FABULOUS.

Ditto on the raspberries and blueberries. GROW YOUR OWN kiddo.

I have no idea what a "hybrid" is but it's fact that most of our produce has had genes altered to make them bigger, more appealing, keep bugs away, last longer, etc. etc. etc.

It's been happening for quite a while. They should specify this on the package and we should be pushing government to enforce that.

Frankly if it comes from outside of Canada I don't TRUST IT. I know what our standards are and have no idea what other countries like Columbia, Peru, etc. do to their foods. I know what they do to their people and that is all I have to know.

Most strawberries come from California even in Canada...75 percent of the time they are mouldy and have fuzz and brown spots on them. I will take FRESH and local any day.

I live in North Jersey and find that soft fruits like strawberries are much better local than imported. There are several pick-your own and other small farms that grow their own. Those are the best! If we must buy imported, we sprinkle a small amount of sugar or pour on a little cream - that brings out the flavor!

    Hi,

i don't have an answer, but a comment...

my ex used to work at a produce stand in florida, and knew everything, which worked cause i didn't... we also lived in florida.

when february/march would come along he'd say that now is the time to buy local strawberries - at the store/supermarket or at the farm. that's when they are ripest and picked at the best time - depending on rainfall. since i let him handle it i don't recall the details very well. if he calls me tonight i'll see if he can explain it to me and i'll add what he said.

just to add to all the other answers... hope it helps

they are all made by chemicals thats why they are so big and gross. i work in a grocery store, in a bakery. we use strawberries all the time. some days they are the size of a watermelon other days they are the size of a blueberry. only a select few taste good. it sucks. maybe you should grow a strawberry farm :)

Mainly the ones from California are lacking in flavor.

Local stands, and the ones from Louisiana have better climate for best flavor.

  • It's because of all the pesticides and chemicals and "enhancements" made to the soil. I say they're all "steroided" strawberries because they're as big as a fist! And you're right they have no flavor :(

It's kind of like everything else in the world.......high price but no quality. My favorite strawberry's are wild ones! They grow in my parent's field.

Hybrids. Size and appearance is more important than taste. Alot like people these days.
