need help on XP start-up?

I know there is a way to control which programs enable on start-up. I am running windows XP pro on a dell lattitude d810. All that garbage that your printers and other periph do on start-up slows down the system, what do I need to do to get more control over what is activated on start-up? Thanks

To control what starts with Windows:

Click Start and then Run. (Vista – Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run). In the run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then hit "Enter". This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab. Now remove the check mark from any and all programs that you “do not” want to start or "boot" with Windows. Now click apply and then click OK.

You will need to restart your system. When the system starts you will see a box stating that you used the Config. utility, put a check in "Don't show this box at startup".

    That should do it.

Do not remove any check marks from your security software. You want it to load with your operating system. As for the rest of the programs that are set to load with the OS, you will just have to experiment. Stuff like Adobe Reader, Gama loaders, Word, etc, can be turned off. They do not need to load with the OS, you can just click on their icons to launch these programs.

you can get more control of start up programs by downloading Ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ you have more control over what starts up than using msconfig. not only is it a good registry cleaner and junk file finder but when you run it you can click the tools button then click the star up button and then have the time of your life disabling what ever you want

Click Start > Run > and in the field type msconfig > click on the Startup tab.

From there, you can select the app to disable at startup.

Go to settings, start up and minimize the number of start up programs the system addresses prior to start up
