Is it okay to apply lipstick at the table after dinner?

This makes me uncomfortable and feels unappropriate, especially in better restaurants. Your thoughts?

It is inappropriate to do any sorts of grooming at the table, this including putting on makeup, brushing/fixing your hair, etc. Always excuse yourself to the restroom.

    It is not inappropriate.

Some people find it to be in bad manner.

But those people should lighten up.

Putting on lipstick doesn't effect anyone at the table.

This whole 'groomin' thing has gotten blown out of proportion. It is bad etiquette to brush your hair at the table, because it can get into peoples plates and foods. I'm sure you won't brush your teeth at the table, for obvious reasons.

But to take it to the extreme that you can't swipe on some more lipstick after a meal?

That's silly. People are like sheep, they repeat what they've hear without questioning why?

This is my personal rule of thumb for etiquette decisions:

I ask myself 'will what I'm doing be somehow selfish, repulsive or unthoughtful of others?'

If the answer is yes, than I don't do it.

If it is no, than I proceed.

I apply lipstick without using a mirror and I'm quite good at it. So, I finish in a second before anyone gets a chance to understand what's going on. I don't do it in classy restaurants but I have applied it in informal restaurants and cafes. I feel comfortable and I don't consider it inappropriate; it's more difficult to get to the toilet if it's not near your table.

First of all why does it make you feel uncomfortable?

I agree that it is not in good table manners to do any type of grooming at the table but it's not inappropriate.

    Emily Post says that's a no-no.

not really...it's not rude, but it's not good table manners either, just go to the restroom and put it on.

I don't believe so. The proper thing to do is excuse yourself for a moment to "freshen up"

Sure. I am usually too busy flossing to even notice.
