Is this a legitimate beef that conservative Christians have with the transgender anti-discrimination law (in Maryland), or more scare tactics and misinformation? (Or something else, obviously, which you are more than welcome to share.)

(For those of you who don't follow links...) "...the bill’s purpose was to “prohibit discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations, cable television service and taxicab service on the basis of gender identity.” Its primary effect was to add “gender identity” as a protected class from discrimination along with age, race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, handicap, national origin or marital status under County Code Chapter 27."

Thanks for your perspective, TerriLee

No, it is not a legitimate beef. What these fear mongers don't seem to realize, is that we've been using their facilities for eons. It's nothing new and it's really not about bathrooms. It's about us not losing our jobs, homes, and our lives. The fear mongers (who are being supported by West Coast conservative religionist factions) are doing everything they can to distort the truth and put fear in the hearts of ignorant Americans. They lied to get the necessary signatures to have the measure placed on the ballot and they will continue to lie in deference to how true Christians are instructed to behave by the Bible they use to thump us with. Oh yes, I am a Christian and I am Transgendered and I know truth from lie. It's an effort by a few conservative religionist (they are certainly NOT Christians) to put us back in our proverbial closets, and I for one will not put up with that. Finally, this is another effort to legislate discrimination into the law of the land and Americans need to wake up to that fact. We should never enact legislation that is discriminatory. That's very counter productive to our Society as a whole. If they can do it to us, they can do it to any group they have a beef with.

"Last week, Colorado's legislature passed - and Gov. Bill Ritter signed - a law that will open all public accommodations, including public restrooms, to anyone who wants to use them. That means men may use a women's restroom, and women may enter men's rooms. The rationale for Senate Bill 200 is that transgenders should be able to use the restroom they feel most comfortable using. Apparently, it is not important if others feel uncomfortable having their privacy violated every time they use public facilities. "

Dang, I live here and I didn't know this - wonder why the local nws had nothing to say on it? But htey sure made a big old stink about the "Imagine no religion" billboard down by the state capital.

EVERY restroom - men's and women's - has stalls; the vast majority with locking doors. IF the faint possibility that someone you don't like could maybe be using the restroom at the same time as you bothers you that much, then lock yourself in a stall where they can't get to you. Like they want to be near people exuding fear and hatred anyway.

There is no safety issue here - that's just a stack of fearmongering and bullcrap. I know several transgender folk in various stages of it - they are NOT going to risk their ability to have the surgery by doinf something stupid, and people who would rape or be violent sexually dn't tend to become transgender or even dress as the opposite sex.

ONLY issue I have with this is - gentlemen, if you use the ladies room, do us a favor and don't pee on the seat. Thank you.

The problem could very easily be solved by having a common wash area and then cubicals, which are used by one person at a time! Therefore the gender issue would depend of whoever is using it at that moment!

Any other issues are to be viewed as Social and legal which will always exist while people don't face the policing problem of any social area!

If we have crime in our society it is because we are not able to understand how humanity can work within the model created.

My last statement is simple and concerns Nature!

When you've got to go, You've got to go!

Anything else is a misuse of the facilities provided!

This should be the issue, and not who is doing their 1's and 2's and where! (Anyone who spends too much time considering this, has problems!)

Our country has and is been discriminating for years. Woman's Lib has given the rights to be fire-woman, police officers, doctors, lawyers and even cab driver's. I'm a cab driver. now. and better yet a possible woman vice president. Let us roar. We have come a long way baby. Transgender????who cares. If they act appropriately then by all means let them use the bathroom.

Well I do think the "public accommodations" part is controversial and problematic. Many mothers/fathers take young children into public restrooms - you don't need the local transvestite in there too, confusing a small child.

Such a situation is such a blatant violation of some people's sensibilities (not just Christians by the way, but people of many backgrounds and religions) that to allow it would be discriminatory in itself. You can't dismiss and insult the majority.

*sighs* you CANNOT justify the treatment Christians give to others no matter how you try.
