HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO LOSE 40lbs?

I am 29 years old / 160lbs/ 5'0 tall/short..lol I have been going to the gym for a month now. I feel better but have not noticed any weight loss or much difference yet in appearance. I workout at least 5 days a week. I do a daily spin class 45 min/ I do zumba twice a week 45 min/ I do weights upper/lower body alternating each day for about 40 mins. I also walk/run on the treadmill or do the eliptical for 30 mins a day./ on my off days from the gym I swim and stay active. I also am eating healtheir -but its work in progress. How long will it take for me to reach my goal of losing 40lbs and to start to notice a big change in appearance?

Well I managed to lose 48lbs in just over 6 months. That was 20 months ago. I have since then been able to maintain my weight with ease.

I had for many years struggled with my weight. Tried almost every diet. Whilst, many worked and I lost weight with some more than others. Unfortunately, I as soon as I stopped all the weight would pile back on again, plus more.

So I decided to change my lifestyle. I set out to eat a healthy sensible diet and embarked on regular exercise.

I kept all junk foods, ready made processed meals, alcohol, and takeaway meals to an absolute minimum. These are high in refined sugar and full of saturated fat. Junk food is just what it says - JUNK. With one added ingredient in - FAT.

I ate a diet of (and still do) :-

Lean meats (no fat on), poultry (no skin on), fish with scales on (no batter), eggs, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables (including potatoes) making sure I keep the carborhydrates plain and simple), low fat dairy products, skimmed milk, non sugary cereals.

I also included more whole foods into my diet. Such as brown rice, brown pasta, brown bread, beans & pulses.

I think losing weight is about 70% diet. Exercise will help acelerate your weight loss.

I joined a gym like you. Attended 4/5 times a week. Basically just doing cardio. As this is good to get your heart rate up. It will also tone your entire body by burning off excess calories.

But you have to remember you will only lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume. To lose a pound, you have to burn, through exercise, or life functions about 3,500 calories.

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula when it comes to weight loss. But it is possible to lose a considerable amount of weight, just as it is possilble to put weight on.

It is hard to say how long it will take you to lose 40lbs. As everyone is different. A healthy weight loss is about 1lb/2lbs a week. You can lose more at first by doing exercise, but as time goes on weight loss will slow down and you will have to try even harder. Then once you have lost your weight. Then the challenge begins in keeping the weight off.

You will start to notice a change in your appearance with a weight loss of 14lbs or more. That is usually when your clothes start to feel loose, and often then dropping a dress size.

Be patient, and don't give up. It is possible to achieve your goal.

    Good luck.

I was also like Key, lost 30 lbs in about 3 months by mostly cutting out unneccesary foods.

I'm not any where near a fitness/dieting expert, but you may not notice a change because you see yourself everyday. Why not take a picture of yourself each week, or write down your measurements/weight every couple weeks.

Also, if you're doing weight lifting, you may be replacing your fat with your muscle you're gaining (if you're doing heavy lifting) - which may account for not having a dramatic dip in weight loss. Don't take that to mean cutting out weights, i only mention this as a possible indicator for not having a dramatic result.

Weight loss and excersize are never dramatic like you see on TV. I wouldn't expect to lose more than 3 or 4 pounds a week. You'll probably notice your energy level increasing first, and then other people will notice, and eventually you will. Good Luck!

Took a real close look at everything your eating and drinking

Dont be afraid to research even the most minute things

You can lose around 4 pounds a week if you really go for it

    4lbs X 10 weeks = 40lbs

Don't expect to see a big change for 6 weeks. The fat inside your body will burn off first.

An average of 1.5 - 2 pounds per week can be achieved using a healthy diet and excercise. This is an optimal expectation for weight that will actually stay off. So 5-6 months minimally.

I lost 30lbs in 3 months. I walked every day for an hour, stopped drinking soda completely, and no sweets like candy, ice cream. I ate a lot of fruit when I got hungry. I realized that when I was dieting I was weighing myself almost everyday, and it didn't work so I started weighting myself once a week and I started noticing a difference. I hope this helps a little.

This is a radical view; but, I would rx. a diet pill to help lose the first 10 pounds. After you see some significant weight loss, your self confidence will improve and you will be off to the races. I think focusing on each day rather the each pound is a better way to count your progess. Rule: dont waste even one day. The pounds will take care of themselves. Exercise for an hour and exert to a sweat level.

I really would have thought that you would have seem results by now. I would consider getting my thyroid tested if I were you and if everything works out there you might try and get a personal trainer. They say once you get older its harder to loose weight but you still seem young and active! Go to the doc and see what he thinks it could be. Are your clothes fitting looser? You are working out and could be gaining a lot of muscle too.

i know someone who did that for about 1-2 months, although he dropped rice and mashed potatoes, played basketball everyother day, avoided meat and ate mostly vegetables. 3months i guess will be your best bet.

  • im just guesstimating but like 8 weeks, which would be like 5 pounds per week, but it all depends on how fast your body burns calories and stuff. :)
