My Nikon D70 focuses my Tamron model A061 28-300 mm lens but won't take the photo. What's going on?

My D70 drives and focuses my Tamron model A061 AF 28-300 mm lens just fine, but will not take the photo when zoomed beyond 28 mm unless I push the AE-L/AF-L focus button. Then it will take the photo. I normally run it in the "P" (program) position, not in the "Auto" position. What is going on and how do I get the camera to take the picture without having to push the AE-L/AF-L button? Do I need to update the software?

Hi there. Just to check for a malfunction, try putting your camera in M (Maunal) mode for once. Keep the lens on Auto Focus. You will need the correct exposure but then see if the camera will take the picture.
