This is a group for PET RATS and you're asking how to kill them.
Please folks, hit report, I have.

Poison is not good because the poisoned rat may be eaten by a cat or owl, and kill that animal.
Regular snap traps are effective. So is the Rat Zapper, which is more humane and less messy, and can be re-used for years.
If you want to catch them alive, good luck, you can buy a trap at the hardware store that is okay for catching the big ones, and then maybe you should get a mouse trap to catch the juveniles.
You can let the rats go in a field, but consider that they aren't doing any good there either. They are not a native species. Of course they will serve to feed coyotes, bobcats, feral cats, owls, etc. They could feed hawks too, but then rats don't come out very much in the daytime.
[It's true this is the section for pet rodents, I don't know why the YA machine always puts these questions here. It's not the fault of the asker.]

Please don't use poison! Not only do I think its wrong to kill rats, but Ive had cats die from eating rat poison. Im not sure if they ingested it through eating a dead poisoned rat or from eating the poison itself, but either way its not a nice way to die. First they get really weak and spend about an hour lying down moaning. Then they start to have these sort of seizures, or convulsions. After about half an hour of these they die. So before you put down rat poison think about how many other animals you might be killing. Try a humane trap if you must. As was pointed out already these traps often hurt the rat as well but at least its not dead, and rats heal fats.

Rat poison is very dangerous, to one and all alike. Use live trap then release away from your home. As long as you are not dumping a domestic animal a field is fine.

Personally I could never be responsible for the death of an animal, whether it be rat, bird, or what have you.
When I had mice my cat took care of the problem so.....my advice is if you must pick one choose a live trap as the poison could be ingested my a child or pet.

Poison takes a while, and a dog or cat that might feed off it might die to also birds. Trap is best, and just don't say anything and release it, but if you would like to know for sure call you local animal control and they should be able to give you the regulations:)

I have known of D-Con to work on rats. If the rats are big, they will run off with a glue trap so that is no good. Go for the rat poison.

Decon works. My mom bought some and it wiped out the rats she had.
There is no law regarding releasing rats into a field.

Have you tried one of the ultrasonic methods on the market now. Just plug it in, and supposedly the sound drives them away.
(side note to Wile E.: check the dosage on your medication, you seriously need to de-stress!!)
