How to connect SQL client TO SQL server 2000 ?

I installed SQL Server 2000 on one machine and SQL Client on another machine both conected through TCP I P how i manage to connect them both ? i have a database on the server and i have tried all the options of conections and always says login failed for user.. ??'??? i need help with these step by step explanation.

    If you are supplying a user name/password to connect to SQL Server, then you should have it configured for mixed mode authentication.

    When connecting to the server, You should specify the login and password of the user which is registered on the SQL server.
