28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: Mark 12:28, 29

It really helps to read the verse in the context it was written. Notice, verse 28 the scribe asked Jesus which of the commandments is the greatest, most important. Jesus responded with the 29th verse.

My version (NIV) says: The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Isael the Lord our God, The Lord is one.

Yewah and Jehovah are names people used for God.

Then Jesus goes on to answer the question saying Love the Lord your God with all your heart. He was saying that is the most important commandment because if we love God everything else will fall into place.

I don't have a direct answer for you but I do know that in Bible times people worshiped many, many Gods. The israelites worshiped "God". He may have been saying there is only one God.

The Greek text at that point QUOTES from the Septuagint (LXX) Greek TRANSLATION of the Hebrew scriptures which was in COMMON USE and MOSTLY accepted by the Jews at the time. BOTH read "ακουε ισραηλ κυριος ο θεος ημων κυριος εις εστιν," literally, "listen Israel, lord the God of us lord one he is." It DOES NOT SAY "YHWH," but, then again, it is, like the rest of the New Testament, written in Koine Greek.

Outside Judea, this Greek translation was used in most synagogues, but Judea still used primarily the Hebrew, along with an Aramaic translation. Hebrew was, at this time, already a dying language.

It is quote, the Shema, the prayer every devout Jew says at least three times a day.

    Deuteronomy 6:4

Sh'ma Yis'ra'eil Adonai Eloheinu Adonai echad.

Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.

They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. Say ,"O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."

One important reason was because Gentiles practiced worshipping many Gods in the form of trinities or triads.

    According to Harper’s Bible Dictionary

    Baal / Bel ,

“Baal translates into English is Lord”

    (Do you worship the Lord?)

Baal is the offspring (son) of El, (Hebrew for God)”

(Do you worship the Son of God?)

Baal is worshiped as a triad / trinity.”

(Do you worship a trinity of Gods?)

    (Do you worship Baal?)

Where did I hear this teaching recently?

Sounds like a teaching of Satan, What do you think?

    Who is fulfilling this prophecy?

(Jeremiah 23:27) 27 They are thinking of making my people forget my name by means of their dreams that they keep relating each one to the other, just as their fathers forgot my name by means of Ba´al.

(Psalm 83:18) 18 That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

Even if ‘Sam’ is a Grandfather, Father, and Son, Sam still has only one will, unless he is mentally disturbed or Sam is three different individuals. Sam Sr., Sam Jr., & Sam III.

It is by God’s will we have salvation.

True worship never involved a trinity. It was always a practice of false religion.

Because all Jews say that three times a day. Why wouldn't Jesus?

Source(s): And when I say all, I mean some! (more specifically, those that follow traditional Jewish rules)

Becasue he was quoting verbatim a commandment in the Old Testament.

He is merely saying that there in only ONE God (monotheistic). The dogma of the Trinity is also based upon the fact there is only ONE God (ONE God in 3 persons).

Saying " Hear O ISRAEL(THE NATION OF ISRAEL, BEING THE JEWS) OUR G-D(IMPLIES PERSONAL IMPLICATION AGREEMENT WITH ACCEPTING AS OWN TOO) G-D IS

    ONE.
