KIds found Northern Brown Snake?
My kids found a nothern brown snake outside our house this morning near the hose bib. They want to keep it, and after some initial research it seems harmless. How are they to care for, & are there any concerns I should have considering we've taken this one from the wild.

Ashley needs to do some more research. Northern brown snakes don't eat rodents and don't grow big enough to eat a fuzzy mouse. They only eat slugs and earthworms. Try to feed it mice and it will starve to death. Not to mention, 90 degrees is too much for them.

taking anything from the wild should be avoided and there are always risks. Salmonella is a number one risk. Number two is internal parasites, but these are dangerous for the snake, not your kids or you. As far as temperament, they are like garter snakes, minus the mildew defense smell.
Brown snakes can be kept in a 15 gallon or 20 long. Use ground coconut fiber as a substrate, normally found in a brick form that expands. Give it something to hide under, there are plenty of options for decor. A water bowl deep enough for the snake to submerge itself completely is good. It should have a basking spotlight of about 85-90 degrees on one side of the tank and the other side will allow the snake to cool off.
For food, live pinkies (day old baby mice) or live hopper (baby mice with fur) will do. You will probably have to resort to live because it is wild caught. You could always try frozen though. Feed it once a week. You can mist the enclosure once a day as well.
