Why hasn't the NBA allowed head coaches to challenge calls by the officials via instant replays?

I was reading this article about the alleged corruption during the NBA playoffs several years ago.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/8236340/Ref's-c...

It got me wondering why other sports like tennis and football have already adopted instant replay to improve the purity of the game, while the NBA hasn't done it. Is it because corrupt NBA execs want the option of fixing a series for financial gain?

Update:

To Colorado:

The technology to increase the value of the refs' decision-making is available. When we're talking about millions of dollars in players' salary, advertising revenue, ticket sales and, not to mention, hometown pride, I think management should do everything they can to make sure that the players, coaches and officials act in a manner that's professional. A system of checks and balances is what any league needs to maintain the purity of the sport.

you cant challenge penalties in the NFL. the NBA does use video to check the clock. david stern is such a smug prick, how can he control the outcome of a game by using refs if you can challenge the refs? just think how much the NBA and the owners make for every additional playoff game.

as said, there would be no need for refs, flopping would be greater. NBA players would become great actors.

Being a ref has some gut feel to it too. Referees make calls from their angle, not the telecast angle.

If it was allowed, alot of film would be sent over to refs.

Teams would be watching film looking for bad calls than scouting their opponents.

Tennis is a smaller game, especially with the referee (or is it umpire) in the middle calling the shots if a tennis ball (which is alot smaller) hit the outside or touched the line. instant replay doesn't do that much for this game.

Because then the refs would be forced to make the correct calls and the NBA couldn't manipulate the results of series.

this would take away from the frenetic pace of the game. but i don't think this is a bad idea either.

what i would do is give 1 challenge per team per half. and you can only challenge calls that would not totally ruin the continuity of the game.

    i.e.

you can challenge calls like charges/blocks, out of bounds plays, etc. and of course, last second shots at the end of a quarter/half. in short, any calls that would result in a change of possesion if it was called either way.

you cannot challenge loose ball fouls, small, petty fouls, etc. in short, calls that would not result in a change of possesion if it was called either way.

and if they get the challenge wrong, they lose their remaining challenge.

    what y'all think?

f|_|ck stern. and f|_|ck some refs. some of them have the judgement abilities similar to the jury of oj's case. the other refs are just human after all, making honest mistakes.

Basketball games are too fast paced, plus there would be a lot of acting taking place on the court...We know NBA teams hardly practice in the first place; they'd start spending their practices devising schemes to make it look like a foul or penalty has been committed when there really wasn't one.

First because the game would be like 5 hours long because the coaches would want to challenge every play hoping that they win.

And Second, because without the refs "bad calling" situations basketball wouldn't be as fun to watch anyway.

    Its just a game. =]

Well, in a game where integrity is questioned.

This will allow the refs to have the ultimate power to sway the game in the direction that it is 'supposed to go'.

Well, it'll take way too much time just to look at the plays. They should allow coaches to challenge calls, though.

The NBA is too fast-paced. It isn't like football where you have a minute between every play.

  • because that would be taking away the value in the refs decisions and the nba has trust in the refs and refs bad calls are part of the game
