"Man made" global warming, Real or Hoax?

Consider the fact that the earth is 5 billion years old, since then the earth has gone through numerous warming and cooling trends. See Chart at this link

http://www.scotese.com/climate.htm

If you think it is caused by man, please explain what caused all the previous warming trends before man walked on this earth.

Update:

MIke, it is widely accepted that we have just left an ice-age.. not beginning one.

Can you explain all the previous warming trends?

Update 2:

Beren,

The point im trying to make is this:

If we cannot explain what caused all the previous warming trends, how do we know what is causing the current trend?

. Since we are at the end of an ice age, keyword being "end", maybe the earth is supposed to warm.

I'm looking for an explanation to the previous warming trends.

Update 3:

Ok.. so volcanoes, wildfires and the like contribute as well. And so we haven't had any of those things since the industrial age?

Update 4:

That is another of my points. If 1 inch = 1 year.

Then the earth has been around for 78,914 miles.

The industrial age was 10 feet ago!

How can we possibly tell that we are causing it in such an incredible short period of time??

Hoax. Fear-based, outcome-oriented "science" in order to discourage capitalism and increase the size of government and its regulations.

The hippies won in the 70's on nuclear power; they scared us so silly over unproven fears that we nearly regulated ourselves out of a safe, viable energy source, and have kept us from allowing a new nuke plant to be built since then.

So since they won that battle, they needed a new environmental "issue" to champion (ie, a new way to throw stumbling blocks into the free market which they hate so much), and have seized upon Global Warming. Joy. And their friends in the media (most are former hippies themselves) are only too happy to stir the kool-aid for them.

"Hippies. They're everywhere. They wanna save the earth, but all they do is smoke pot and smell bad." -Eric Cartman, from South Park

I don't know why it has to be an all or nothing thing. Can't mankind contribute to a naturally-occurring global warming phenomenon? I've read that scientists say mankind contributes about 1% towards global warming, so that's definitely a contribution, albeit a small one. Then again, I'm not a scientist so I don't know for sure. On the other hand, everybody can agree that pollution is a bad thing, global warming or no.

The time scale on the chart is so much larger than what is relevant to our current situation.

    Try looking at this chart:

    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/2007/

Previous warming events have been linked to increases in volcanic activity

    http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-04/osu...

No we have not had the magnitude of volcanic activity that previously caused global warming events.

You need to learn to seperate the time scales. Geological time scales are a million times larger than the modern man's time scales.

When we talk about increased volcanic activity, we are not talking about one or two volcanic eruptions. We are talking about a series of volcanic events that take place over thousands or perhaps millions of years.

I do not believe "global warming" is created by man. I refuse to "jump" on such a bandwagon. There are zillions of events happening throughout our World and the Cosmos that probably are playing in the warming and cooling cycles of every planet.

There are hundreds upon hundreds of noted scientists who do not believe in this "hoax" of "global warming created by man", or that man could actually DO anything about it. I say let nature takes its course. True we as humans need to be good stewards of our Earth. But in everyone's haste, they will do MORE HARM than good I fear.

Great question. Obviously it is a hoax.

I have yet to get answer to this question as well. Here in ohio, we were taught that the entire state was covered by glaciers. No glaciers now, so at SOME point it warmed up. WHY?????

Why can none of the followers of the faith of global warming answer this??????

it is true that there are natural warming and cooling cycles, however, we should be headed into an ice age. We're obviously not doing that. The difference? Man. For those that don't think extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can cause global warming, please look up Venus.

I consider it a hoax. You're right in pointing out the history of our planet. People tend to think science is always right, but the fact that they've renamed Pluto recently shows they sometimes aren't.

I do not believe we have enough data to make that determination.
