What do Victorians, SA, WA, think of Rugby League?

Hey Victorians, someone from your section asked this question in Rugby League, so I thought I'd also give you guys a chance to let rip. Plus, i'm interested if any AFL fans from Victoria or SA or WA watched or liked the State of Origin?

If you don't like Rugby League, i'm also interested as to why you don't like it, what parts of our game just don't do it for ya?

I'm not trying to be too funny, i'm just genuinely interested.

Or if you like, you can just abuse me!

I was born in Sydney and was a mad rugby league player and fan (supporting Manly Warringah) until Super League started, and my son decided to play AFL. I love in Canberra now which is really an AFL town, despite the Raiders.

Now - to sum up I watched Australian Idol instead of Manly playing in the grand final last year. The game is too short, predictable and boring. I still watch the state of origin but even those games, which are suppose to be showcases, show very little flair. Just running from dummy half all the time. Coaches won't take a chance and everything is based around defence.

There are no real set moves in AFL, except from the kick in after a behind. You can't really sit on a lead - you have to keep scoring. There is a place for big men, short men, fast men (probably not too many slow men). Because AFL is such a long game, going to it is more of an event. And the crowd and atmosphere is something I never experienced in league.

AFL all the way. Rugby league is sooooo boring! I haven'y even watched a game of rugby league. I totally agree with the first answer. Its so boring all they do is sprint after each other basically trying to push them to the ground. I know they can say AFL is justing kicking a ball around but its not. Its something more interesting and most people in Australia I think would way rather AFL! Oh and by the way GO THE MIGHTY PIES... lol

Okay I'm a new south welshman, but I feel I need to give my 2 cents worth. Born in sydney I adore my league (stop calling it rugby, its 'leauge', 'NRL' or 'rugby league'), but (as evidenced by my username) I love the swannies as well.

A lot of you think NRL takes no skill and that the players are boof heads, but I couldn't disagree more. Sure there is probably less endurance and ball skill, but the game involves more physicality and strength. Don't doubt the players intelligence either. Yes there are idiots like Willie Mason, but the AFL has losers like fevola, akermanis and Johnathan Brown. Anyway what about Robbe Farah the tigers hooker, he's completing a Economics Degree at Sydney University - one of the hardest courses to get into. I think you need a UAI of over 96.

Well, as a West Aussie, I prefer League to AFL. I find it a lot more exciting. If I had been able to watch games I might have even taken the sport up as a kid.

Here in WA you have to be keen to view games on tv, the games are normally on late at night, which it should be noted is better than it was a few years back when NO Rugby(either codes) was shown. Also the NRL Footy Show is only shown sometimes, and even then at between midnight & 2am.

I hate it lol rugby and soccer, doesn't matter.

I admit though that I have tried to watch the State of Origin (my best friend is right into it) but apparently I'm a 'true Victorian' when I watch it because I constantly scream out 'he tripped him' or 'he tried to take his head off'. I just can't get my head around how they get away with things that you can't get away with in the AFL. That and the fact that I just don't understand how it's played is probably why I don't like it.

As for soccer though, I think it's a real skirt's game, not rough enough for me and they don't score enough to keep me interested.

I was born in VIC but have lived in QLD since i was 17, I love Aussie Rules and dislike Rugby league. Rugby league seems so boring to me and every game looks the same. If i was born in Sydney or QLD though i would probably love League and hate Aussie Rules (maybe).

    I like Rugby League,.

I'm from a non-rugby state but I watch the State of Origin matches between the Blues & the maroons. I don't mind watching the game. I prefer AFL but also watch league, union & soccer (generally on Foxtel) especially if it is a big game. I don't watch the weekly club games all that often - as I do AFL.

  • Coming from WA (does anyone actually remember the Western Reds??), Rugby League is not high on the viewing list here. A couple of years ago myself & the husband lived in NSW for 18 months so we did watch a few games (on tv) and I have to say, just didn't do it for me at all. Not sure why. I guess it's just what you're used to. AFL seems much quicker and I always find it strange that you must go backwards to go forwards. Don't hate it, just don't get it

afl is probly the worst sport ever.. your other answers say that its a poofy sport & their evidence is that the players are ugly & dumb.. good job 4 that! and nrl players only tackle around the ankles & chase each other?? try pulling hits off on 100+ kg solid real men not lil metro fags & see if it takes no physicality or skill.. we pass the ball backwards only centimeters to keep the receiver onside and than run it up hard to the line and try and break down their defence.. whats the worst that can happen in afl? a broken finger nail or a sore back from jumping on each others for the whole game.. afl might have better kickers & a tiny bit fitter because thats what afl is.. but nrl players are tougher, smarter, stronger and faster.. the only skill you need in afl is hitting a ball out ur hand with ur fists & kicking a ball.. jeezz wat an exciting game that is! lol.. serious anyone think gay guys running around in circles kicking balls through posts is more exciting than men ball dazzling, stepping, palming ( which u gays arent even alloud to do coz its such a soft game), the line breaks, the fights, the kicks to set up tries ur a dead set idiot.

    thankss
