$15 for a bag?

What do you think of American and United charging $15 for a bag?

It seems it will make boarding time a pain. I thought an airplane ride was to go on vacation and hence bring clothes.

Form the airline's perspective, an airplane trip is not to go on vacation. It's to make a profit for the airline. Otherwise, there will be no airlines left and you won't be able to go on vacation. Right now, Southwest and Allegiant are the only two profitable US airlines.

Yes, it will probably make boarding a bigger hassle as passengers try to carry everything on.

People who are upset about it should vote with their wallets. Fly on another carrier that doesn't charge for bags. The airline can't get away with it if customers won't let them. However, every airline executive knows that customers are mostly interested in the cheapest fare. As long as they offer that, people will pay up for the luggage. Just ask the folks at Spirit Airlines. They were charging for all checked bags before American and it didn't drive customers away. After that, it was probably only a matter of time before others tried it.

US Airways charges $15 for the first checked bag as well. People not affected are those who purchased their tickets on or before June 9th 2008 and Dividend Miles preferred members. As for United, they too charge $15 for the first checked bag. Travelers exempt are those that purchased before June 13th 2008, as well as One Pass preferred members. Hope this helps.
