Stay away from the big discount stores because I think they make deals to get the price down and the paint can be like water. K- mart sold me some dutch boy paint that was like white wash. It wasn't worth my time to put it on.

So go to a good paint store or Lowe's, Home depot etc. Expect to pay at least 20 dollars a gallon. I use Olympic, American Tradition, and for exterior I use severe weather by Valspar

Primer is important if you the walls have not already been painted. Kilze is usually used when you have areas that you want to keep from bleeding through such as mold. Otherwise regular primer is fine. As a designer I usually use either Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. If you go with better paint you will get a better coverage. Especially if you are painting a light brown color~ I love Benjamin Moore and they offer paint that coats in one coat and has lower VOC ~"Volatile Organic Compounds" which is the smell you usually smell it is not that healthy for you to breath. The Affinity Collection works really well. it is about $55- a gallon, but it dries almost odorless, quickly, and may even cover in one coat.

I like Behr and I also like Porter Paints. Last time I had any painting done, I bought Valspar. I found the perfect color, and I wasn't picky about the brand. The painter said it was the best paint he'd ever used. Valspar is sold at Lowe's.

I don't think there's a "best". There are many quality paints, and if you stick with one of the big names, you can't go wrong.

My husbad is a contractor and swears by Sherwin Williams Eminence paint. We used it in our kitchen to cover a burgandy colour with a light neutral and it covered in one coat. It is a washable flat paint and is around $45 a can but well worth it. It is alot of fillers in it to hide wall bumps and bruises.

Behr (Home Depot) is often rated highly in CR and is a good paint.

Sherwin Williams has good paint, but a bit more expensive than Behr, generally.

I like Benjamin Moore best, but it is expensive.

I suggest Bher. i use this type very often and it has been very durable. You can get it at home depot. but the quality of paint also depends on the color you are looking for. for example for the color red you have to layer it many times to match the paint sample.

KILZ brand interior latex paint is awesome and usually covers in one coat. Just don't spread it too thinly. It's available at Wal-Mart in many colors.

Dan has it right. Also, we used Kilz for white paint several times and it was fine.
