What large breeds are best for training as mobility assistance dogs?
I have a psychiatric service dog but now I have some serious mobility issues and she is just not large enough to help me. I am considering getting a second dog to train as both a psychiatric and mobility assistance dog. I prefer an extra-large breed that can brace me somewhat. Which extra-large breeds might be most suitable for service dog work? Important traits are gentleness, whether or not the public would see the dog as intimidating in appearance, intelligence, etc.

labs are the BEST working dogs! my family trains labs as working dogs. right now we have 3 labs
four year old female black lab, Stormy (my baby! i luv her!)
one year old female black lab Bella (luv her also)
four month old male yellow lab moby (he's a dummy, but i guess i luv him too!)
you should really try labs, any color will do! they are the best breed around!

I prefer a Great Dane for their height. I have mobility issues and am in the process of training mine to help me. Getting an "extra-large" breed though, you will have to wait until they are older before bearing a lot of weight on them since it takes awhile (up to 2 years) for them to be considered full grown. I also find that even though Great Danes are large dogs, they are considered to be more docile and less intimidating to most people. As for the Saint Bernard, they ten to slobber a lot (which isn't a problem for dog lovers like us) it is a huge problem when going into a restaurant and other public areas etc. Good Luck in your search.

Newfoundland or Bernese Mountain Dog.
Both these dogs mature slowly, so you wouldn't be able to do and weight work until at least 18 months. Getting an adult dog may be better than a puppy.
Both breeds were originally bred for pulling carts or boats. They are strong and friendly.

Labrador, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, and German Shepherds are all great breeds. Also I have seen Newfoundlands and Saint Bernard's (both giant breeds) used from time to time. It depends on the amount of support you need.
