Senators and Panthers hire head coaches?
Sens: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=240543&lid=headlin...
Panthers: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=240596
Ok, who is this Hartsburg guy for the Sens? You'd think they'd hire someone a little more known... And DeBoer too, never heard of him. With all these hirings now, do you think Joel Quenneville, Bob Hartley, or Marc Crawford (or any other high profile head coaches without a team) will find new jobs at all?
btw, what's the record for the most new coaches hired in an offseason? It seems like there's been more than usual lately.

I will give DeBoer a chance as a Panthers fan. He needs to do much more than our past few coaches that is for sure.
I really know little about the Hartsburg guy as well.
I would have liked to have seen a coach with a bit more NHL experience , But he may just be what they need. I am willing to wait and see.A lot will hinge on what he and Martin will do on Draft day. I still see Olli going and we need players and picks. So if something happens there , he will be off on the right foot.

I've heard of Hartsburg and he had been widely rumored to take the Sens job. Like Chris says, he was in the OHL and a pretty darn good one. He was also coach for some World Junior teams.
As for DeBoer, I didn't expect him to get the Panthers job. I've heard his name sparingly before, but really, prior to Doug Wilson mentioning him as a possible candidate for the Sharks, I didn't know much about him. I was thinking Paul Maurice was the man but i guess J. Martin went with DeBoer.

You all are making me feel old having never heard of Craig Hartsburg. I remember him mostly from when he played in the NHL for the Minnesota North Stars. He played in the Canada Cup in both 1981 an d1987. If I remember right he was also named the best defenseman one year at the IIHF World Hockey Championships.
Since he retired from playing in the NHL he has worked his way up through the coaching ranks and has previously coached in the NHL with Chicago and Anaheim. He then went back to junior where he has been very successful.
Think I'll go get my Geritol and my walker now ;-)

Hartsburg coached the Canadian Juniors to gold this year. Also coached the Soo Greyhounds to the conference finals. Hartsburg as already coached the Ducks and Blackhawks so this is nothing new to him
DeBoer coached the Kitchener Rangers to a #1 rank in Canada, and lost in the finals of the Mem Cup (national title)

I feel old too. Was it that long ago that Hartsburg was coaching in the NHL? haha He coached a very average Blackhawks and Ducks team in the early 90s and did very little to help them improve. But that was a long time ago and he's undoubtedly learned a lot about coaching in the 10+ years since. I am encouraged by him taking over in Ottawa and he sounds enthusiastic about the position too.

I've heard of DeBoer......I can honestly say I've never heard of this Hartsburg guy though......
I think Quenneville has a better chance of finding a job than Hartley and Crawford.

Craig Hartsburg was the coach of my hometown OHL team, the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds. He lead the Canadian world juniors to three gold medals

I hadn't heard either of them, or seen DeBoer on the list of Panther considerations...
I like that Jacques Martin went with somebody that is not his puppet, he has been sucessful in lesser leagues... hopefully we make the post-season.

Hartburg was the coach of the Canadian World Junior Hockey Team these past 2 years. He won gold both years. I liked him, pity that he went to the team I hate most.

Craig will be horribly missed in the OHL. it seems the OHL has lost a few very notable faces recently.
