ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. The ASCII character set was an attempt to standardize the different ways to represent character sets with bit patters. There was IBM with EBCDIC, Univac with Fielddata (6 bits per character, if you can believe it) and finally ASCII. ASCII, originally a 7-bit character encoding, did not have room for every set of characters around the world. Unicode, a 16-bit encoding system, has that ability. These days, almost every system uses Unicode.
