You might enjoy the Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. These are kind of along the lines of Patterson and Koontz - mystery/thrillers with a touch of the supernatural thrown in. The first two books, for me at least, were ok, but the series really starts taking off after the third book. There are some really interesting characters, and they don't really explain everything about all of the characters - you get to learn more about them as you go along. You might also try some of John Grisham's books, if you haven't already read those. Some of my favorites are The Client, The Rainmaker and The Appeal. I would also suggest the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell. The first 6-7 books of the series are the strongest, and the series kind of flounders a little after that, but the first several books will give you plenty to read. If you enjoy forensic science mystery/thrillers (kind of like CSI), then you will probably enjoy these as well.
