This happened to two of my friend
Friend A: Lost the tip of her finger in an accident with a horse it got caught and the horse raised up ripping it off.
Friend B: Lost the tip of her finger in a car accident when she fell asleep driving.
Friend A. had a very strong personality and had so much other trauma in her life she adjusted relatively quickly. Within a couple of weeks she seemed mostly normal. She was actually enjoying telling the stories and showing it to people.
Friend B was very depressed about this for a long time. She always tried to hide her hand when in public. The more people tried to comfort her the more self-conscious she became about it.
So really it depends on the person. It is your friend you know them best. Just kind of go with flow and be there as much or as little as you are feeling is appropriate from them.

well he should be lucky he didnt loose something else, like a foot or a head or a whole hand. Every day is a blessing from God and our days our limited so you can mope around all you want about part of your finger missing but that isnt gonna make it any better so you may as well just forget about it and enjoy life while you can! he is so fortunate that he lost only an index finger, i know others where they would do anything to have lost only the tip of an index finger, he will be fine, dont worry (:

Theres no way to undo whats happened so he need to accept that this is it from here on out and have an " oh well "attitude cause theres nothing he can do but live with it. My wife at age 37 lost her leg below the knee. 2 weeks later they remover all her fingers and half of both thumbs. two months later they took off her other foot. She live another 2 years of horror, grief, pain, depression, no self worth or esteem and then died. When your down look around at the ppl that really do have it bad and thank God every day for the many many good blessings he has given you.

How old is he? He might feel depressed to begin with , feeling as though he is defferent from everyone else. But then eventually hopefully he will learn to accept it for what it is. My pop lost his finger now he just enjoys making jokes about how he lost it... noone can figure out the truth. lol. I dont know what personality type your brother is but maybe it would be good not to make a big deal out of it. Give him a hug tell him he's bloody brave (or however guys show their admiration and effection) and just let him come to terms with it. I can almost promise you that by this time next year he too will have his jokes about it.

When something as small as losing the tip of your finger happens be thankful that it wasn't worse like the whole hand. He will function as normal. He's not disabled. Remind him of this.
