    Strengths:

Majority vote (everyone supposedly has a say)

Checks and balances, which doesn't always work, but it works nonetheless

I took a class on this, but I totally forgot because it was 2 years ago. Ha.

Here's a website though that talks about pros and cons and the democracy in the U.S. and other countries

Technically, the US government is not a democracy; we're a constitutinal republic. Democracy is actually a very ineffective form of government (it's mob rule, which is loud, unorganized, and at times, anarchistic), and the writers of the constitution new this. That's why our government is desgined the way it is: we vote for representatives who we are entrusting to run the government on our behalf. In fact, originally the senate wasn't elected directly like it is today, it was chosen by an electoral college like the one that (technically) elects the president. The senate was designed to be ditanced from the people while the house was designed to directly keep up with them. The probalms with pure democracy is people are fickle; immediate response to the masses can cause catastrophic response on a larger scale. The founding fathers were smart enough to make a governement distant enough not to be swayed at a moments notice, but still capable of ensuring liberty. So, in short, we were set up a Constitutional Republic and still are.

One strength is representation of the people as a whole. Therefore, the people have a sort of power over who is elected and running the country. Additionally, democracy allows for a checks and balances system in order to prevent any horrible decisions from being made. For example, if Congress wanted to re-establish slavery, the President could veto this bill to prevent it and vice versa. This helps to ensure any major decisions made are rational.
