Once again, I'm not certain that "bringing democracy to Iraq" was ever the goal. Now, if you mean bring stability to Iraq and out of that stability perhaps a democracy might arise, that was possible early on.

At the beginning of the war, instead of "shock and awe" we might have taken Iraq largely intact. Then, every Iraqi gets a job to help build a better Iraq everybody gets a paycheck. They build more schools, hospitals, better roads, things that every Iraqi can easily see as a benefit to themselves and the country. Everyone gets to support their family. Food is imported and distributed so that no Iraqi goes to bed hungry and angry.

Yes, we pay for it with Iraqi oil but, since the average Iraqi didn't really see oil money coming their way before this wouldn't be such a problem. The Masses that now have jobs and can buy food will support Iraqi doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. by being able to go to them when needed. Once you get everybody working, eating and reading. The reading is essential because if each man and woman can read their own "Koran" then they will be able to develop their own ideas about religion rather than to have those ideas dictated by a few. Educated people tend to argue rather shoot each other so that the various Muslim factions can argue without trying to eliminate each other.

Then, with these seeds planted and cared for, a very fine Democracy might grow there.

A little horse-play and being thrown into the clean pool on a hot day doesn't hurt anyone. Except someone looking for reasons.
