First off, men like to watch women walk up stairs. LOL That's one reason. Second, it is hard to be a peeping Tom and look in a window at women if they are on the second floor and women are safer from rapist climbing in their windows if they are on the second floor.
In one large way it does not make sense, because men are stronger and more capable of dragging their belongings upstairs.
Interesting observation.

That is not always true. I lived in a bunch of dorms where women were on the first floor. I also know of dorm where both men and women live on the first floor.
I would like to say that a lot of the ideas above are really sexist (like about men being able to defend themselves better if someone breaks in or whatever)
Also I don't think it is privacy because many dorms are more than one floor and if the sexes are divided in a building, what about men's privacy (all the women going through the first floor). Also if the building is three floors or more (which most are) then men will be walking through at least one floor.

I've never noticed that before, and I've visited plenty of dormitory buildings in different parts of the country. Sometimes the boys/men are on the ground floor, and sometimes the girls/women are on the ground floor. Sometimes, even, both boys/men and girls/women are on the ground floor just down the hall from one another.

I am stuck on a choice of two different answers.
First I thought maybe it is because they are hoping men won't figure out how to climb up stairs but no that's not it.
Then I thought maybe it is a way of saying that women are above men but that would be subliminal probably.
Of course I have been a few places like Job corp where women and men where on different sides of a large building and couldn't easily get to one another. In the Army we were co-ed and so we were mixed up on the same floor, every floor.
Of course men should be on the second floor; why should women carry their suitcases up a flight of stairs?

Simple.
The ground floors are less secure. It takes more effort to gain window entry into an upper floor room. The higher the room, the more difficult it is.
The upper floors also offer increased privacy.
A good tip is after you graduate and are looking for an apartment, avoid the ground floor apartments. Especially in urban areas where security is an issue.

My college actually had separate dormitories for men and women on opposite sides of campus. And we had the worst visitation hours where you could visit someone of the opposite sex, and the doors had to remain unlocked (That's a southern university for you). I've been to other colleges where the first several floors were for men and the rest for women and one elevator only went to the men's floors while a second only went to the womens. Not sure how they monitored stair ways.
Why? Privacy. Old fashioned ideas about sex. Security.

hmmm...when I lived in a coed by floor dorm. Actually now that I think about it no one lived on the ground floor. Nope I take that back one dorm had the girls on the ground. I should know my girlfriend at the time lived there.

actually i think your right, ive been on quite a few camps thats how its always set up. i think its that if men were on the top floor they would have to walk past the girls dorms and their not trusted to do this while women are, i say that because men are always busted for being in female dorms while females arent busted for being in male

My guess is that should someone with bad intentions break in, a easily accessible floor of women would not be a good idea, hence, why guys would be stuck down there. If not for the "security", then just to be discouraging.

Because in the case of fire, the male students will be able to evacuate more quickly.
I really don't know, but that answer is just as feasible as some of the others listed. Young innocent males away from home for the first time are prime targets for rape, so this idea of men being on the ground floor because they are tougher is ridiculous. Also, who says society ever valued females and tried to protect them? Ever heard of genital mutilation, foot binding, widow burning or the rule of thumb? Chivalry at its best.
