Why are people so rude in the Spanish cities?

I was born in Spain and came to the United States at the age of 5. Since then I have been back to Spain for 1-2 months at a time at least a dozen trips. I am from a rural region in Galicia and had always thought most people (excluding those with government jobs) were friendly and nice. Boy was I wrong. I finally had an extended stay in Barcelona and people were absolutely rude. It seems like people in general and not just the customer service in big cities is horrendous. I was treated better in local towns in Bilbao (local loyalists to ETA). Even in Santiago de Compostela they are not rude like those in Madrid and Barcelona. Can someone explain?

I lived in Spain for a year and it did seem that people in the cities were rude...or at least brusque and impatient.

I am sure this is common in almost all big cities...NYC is a perfect example of that. People in such places live hurried lives and it seems that the competition for everything drives the humanity out of them. Sad, but a fact of life.

Still, rather than think about the people who were rude to me today, I'd rather remember the people who showed me kindness and respect. I remember a student in Barcelona who walked about 2 miles out of his way to help us get to where we needed to go.

Rudeness may be a fact of life, but it's not enough of a problem to keep me from coming back ....I love Spain!

Because in big cities people have too much things to think about or to do, to worry about rural spanish-americans that are on their holidays. That is probably why.

Here's my question: Why "rural" people are so narrow-minded and can't se beyond their nose?

Oh! by the way, analyze if you were rude to "the loyalists to ETA" and "people from Santiago de Compostela", or they are kindly treated in your question ("EVEN them are nicer").

Probably because, like the rest of Europe, the Spanish are fed up with arrogant AmeriKans coming to their country and demanding everything to be AmeriKan.

I assume you speak Spanish, so that shouldn't be a problem.. most AmeriKans know that, if they shout in someone's face loudly enough, that person will immediately speak English... so that shouldn't be your problem.

I'd say they are just tired of AmeriKans.
