Can consciousness in some way transcend the physical limits of the human body and, if so, how?

I was asked to proof read a research paper many years ago, unfortunately I don't still have access to that paper but the key ideas (from memory) were:

That self flagellation/flagellation was key in many religions over time, notably Christianity. That this religious use was to achieve a different 'altered' state so that they were receptive to the teachings of their God.

Caning, whipping and belting were common features in the education system serving two purposes, to ensure right action through fear and practice and to psychologically condition children to practice self flagellation in adult hood.

The writer argued the second point from two perspectives one where the child was introduced to these practices to prevent future misbehaviour and so ensure right action from the fear of punishment. The other was more convincing, it's purpose was to ensure children were receptive of flagellation/self flagellation and would actively seek it to repent as their altered state would be pleasurable. Endorphins are released when the person self flagellates which produce a 'high'.

The writer also discussed BDSM and the trance like state that the submissives gained after a scene, but unfortunately I can not remember the details.

So yes it seems that consciousness in some ways can transcend some of the limits of the human body or perhaps not transcend, but alter their perception of reality (?) through religious practice.

No. Consciousness has no independent existence from your body. You should study brain injury cases if you would like that confirmed. There are no ways to transcend the physical limits of the human body and you should be glad of that if you think about it for more than a minute.

You mean like the 'Ascended' in Stargate? Maybe, but personally, I believe that that 'barrier,' whatever it is, is a major component, THE major component of this life... that we cannot see beyond the barrier, and must do the best we can with this life. IF the 'next level' is a place where 'energy beings' can 'manifest' things with thought or will, perhaps this life, the physical life, is our 'discipline training' for this stage. After all, it takes a WHOLE LIFETIME of discipline, concentration, and dedicated effort to 'manifest' anything in this life. Without developing that mental discipline (and I'm just speculating in the stars here) what would happen on a 'whole plane of beings' whose thoughts and desires manifest in that reality, yet those beings have no control over their thoughts and feelings? Chaos I tells ya! Perhaps (again, just addressing the concepts in the question) this life is the training ground for that one. Rebirth cycles, karmic resolution, Nirvana, all that... perhaps it is the mechanism by which we would reach that 'plane' where the disciplined peaceful are constantly manifesting their thoughts of peace and universal love. Would that not be a 'heaven?' Would not the reverse (empowered entities manifesting their hate, insecurity, and displeasure) be a kind of hell? Is that different from what we physically/emotionally experience in this life?

I agree with the guy below/above. Electric fluid is whats at the core of our being, only we have so many holes, and hooks, and harpoons drived into and through our fields that all these "leaks" leav us drained and weak of our true potential.
