I want to help my son.....?
My son has a first class honors degree in computing science and multi media technology.
He started work at a supermarket when he was 18 to fund his college course, now ten years later he is manager of a department there.
He hates every day and is stressed out totally with the job, 13 hour day and no regular breaks.
He has tried everything he can to get a job in his chosen field but has almost resigned himself to the fact that he cant get in.
Some say he is over qualified, some say he has not enough experience.
Where can he go from here ?
He obviously has his CV plastered all over the net and there is nothing that can escape him from there so he has every avenue covered as far as that is concerned.
I feel his degree is wasted and so does he but what can he do ?
He is on terrific money but is willing to take a small drop in salary to work in computing.
Any ideas anyone ?
Thank so much.
Note to Steve M thanks for your reply and he is in Essex.

Looks like he might have to start at the bottom. Everyone these days wants experience before qualifications.
Local newspapers and websties are the best way to look for jobs, he just might have to aim a little lower such as a "Computing assistant" or "trainee" or "junior".
Hope this helps :)

A lot of the times job availability depends on where you are located. For eg. I have a BSc in MIS and a MSc in GIS. In the US the jobs are endless (so it seemed for me) in both fields. Where I am now...even though there seem to be jobs available in the IT field - its mostly 'you must know someone' networking. If your son is willing to take a chance and move, he might fare better somewhere else. The IT world is long hours as well...but if he loves it, he won't mind. He might have to settle for something way below his expectations (salary and position) to get a foot in the door, that's all you need really, a start. If he is good he won't be in that position for too long. And if he really wants it it will happen...but he has to want it truly though, and take risks. Good luck.

IT is the worst industry for the "No experience, no job. No job, no experience" Catch-22 situation. One possible way in is to also keep an eye on the education sector, for an IT job in a school, as they - for obvious reasons - seem less into this mindset.
I've been there. 28 years at PO Telephones/BT, and a job that was - literally - killing me. Now an IT tech' at a school on half the money but loving it. Well, 99% of the time - you can't have everything.

what part of the country is he working in? might be able to offer some help as I can relate. I know several young men who took assistant manager jobs in supermarkets who actually had nervoius break downs while in there early twenties! it is long hours and pressure from their managers got to them. I say if you can find a job you really like then you will NEVER WORK ANOTHER DAY IN YOUR LIFE.
I work in the multimedia/internet industry and suggest if it is what really interests him, then do what he did in the supermarket. provided his circumstances allow then start as a trainee in computing and he will soon progress to the better money job in short time if he applies himself. Life is a journey and not a destination, he should enjoy the next 10 years. Sometimes trying to hold on to what we have is what prevents us from having far more.
