Useless degrees?
I'm trying to pick a major so I've been poking around yahoo answers looking at what people have to say about different majors. I'm kind of shocked to see that almost every undergrad degree that isn't accounting or engineering or a hard science is considered useless by a large number of people. I've always heard that philosophy and communications are useless, but now I'm seeing that practically any social science or liberal art is considered worthless. Why? Is there any truth to this? I'd rather kill myself than become an accountant, so should I just drop out of school, save myself some money and enter the workforce without a bachelor's degree?

You'll always find a large number of people who think any given subject is worthless - just look at the number of questions on here with people asking why they should have to study maths or a foreign language since they will never use them outside school. After all, it's not like they'll ever need to do sums, or like people exist who don't speak English...
I don't think any degree is worthless - if nothing else you are learning to do research, think critically and present your ideas clearly and comprehensibly. Many degrees aren't directly useful, in the sense that there are no jobs which require that precise degree. But there are also many jobs where it doesn't matter what degree you have...but you are expected to have one.

I've been thinking the same thing recently. I was planning to do a social science degree, but not sure if there's any point unless I wanted to then become a teacher and teach the subject, I can't really think of any worthwhile professions in that area. However, I don't think they are entirely useless, a degree is a degree, and by having one shows future employers you studied a subject thouroughly enough for whatever job you decide to do in life whether it's to do with the degree or not. There's always positive and negative aspects to it like finding employment afterwards, making the 'wrong' choice midway, but in the end I personally think that gaining a degree gives you various skills and knowledge you wouldn't get elsewhere, so you might as well enjoy uni when you're young instead of doing it later. There are many carreer paths to choose from after taking a degree, and finding one which you enjoy is important. You won't necessarily become an accountant, you study other related things combined in the course & as I said, there's alot of different paths to take. Don't be a school drop-out, seriously, get the grades you need and try out a degree.

Agriculture being the #1 Most Useless Degree, that was because not many people find jobs in this field of work. Unless you are going to be a farmer, and already own land to farm. Although, I didn't know if farmers need to have this degree to do their job.

Focus first on what type work you would like to do then choose the appropriate degree or training. You are right a liberal arts degree in most instances does not train you to do anything other than perhaps teach what you degree is in. I got a BS in Chemistry(no BS) many years ago and never used my knowlege of chemistry(which I have now forgot) one bit.

There are no useless degrees. If there were, they would not be offered. It might be difficult for some people with certain degress to get jobs, but not impossible. Philosphy and communications are not useless. Both can be used for many different careers.
Do what you want. Get a degree in what ever pleases you. Don't stay in school if you don't want to.
