Poulan Riding Mower Hydrostatic Transmission Problem?

Has anybody else had a problem with the Poulan Riding Lawn Mower with the hydtrostatic (automatic) transmission?

It seems to go out of gear when under a heavy load and then the gears grind (doesn't go back into gear).

I would suspect the belt. It is not always easy to see if they are worn or not. Belts wear on the sides allowing them to run deeper in the pulleys. This causes the belt to seem stretched. There also is a purging technique detailed in your owner's manual. But if it did need purging it would show up from the start I think. I believe your problem will be solved with a new belt. If you change the belt, before you start look under the left foot rest. My Sear's tractor has a decal under there showing how to install the belt. It is quite handy. I remove the deck and jack it up from the rear with a floor jack to make it a bit more comfortable to work on. Good luck, if it is the transaxle it can get expensive.
