My dog has lumps...Please help?
I just found out my 9 yr old German Shepherd has hard lumps under her skin (feels like rocks) it is in around her mammary gland by rear leg. I suspect it is cancer maybe I called the vet. Anyway my vet won't be in until July 7th..an assistant sugested that I wait the week for him instead of another vet that is filling in because he is a better surgeon and she will have to have surgery. Question is this has anyone had this happpen and it wasn't cancerous? I am heartsick!

my 10 year old beagle has the same thing, except none are cancerous, he said only to start worrying IF when you feel them, you cant move them or if you cant feel the base of them(like if it feels like its attached to something)
and i would wait for my vet, because if they are there now, they wont be going anywhere.

Most of the time with older dogs it's just a sebaceous cyst and as they get older then get more and more and they sometimes can grow quite large but as with any lump it's best to always have the vet check it out just to make sure it isn't cancer. Years ago after we got a brand new puppy I remember finding a lump on her and something told me to have it checked out and I took her to the vet. She was a little Havanese. The vet didn't think it was anything but I insisted he do a biopsy and thank heavens I did listen to that little voice inside of me because it turned out to be one of the most aggressive skin cancers a dog can have. The vet operated to take it off but just like humans we had to wait 7 years to call her clear of the cancer. Thank heavens the vet did get it all and she lived a long full life but as with any lump please always get it checked out by the vet and listen to that voice, your intuition too!

In comparison to us (humans) would it be on the hamstring (back of the leg) and if that is where you felt the lump it is probably a swollen lymph node. The reason I know this is my 15 year old Lhasa died from cancer and I discovered that she had swollen lymph nodes on both of her back legs while I was bathing her. Anytime you find a "lump" on your dog it should be checked out. I found a website that you might want to check out. There are five areas on your dog that you check to see if any other areas are swollen. Like I said my dog's back legs and her throat were very swollen. I had her six months. I hope it isn't anything serious but when it comes to our pets it's best to be safe than sorry.

We had a dog that had a lump and it just ended up being a stopped up gland. The doctor lanced it and it was gone. I hope everything turns out well. I know it's hard to have an animal that is sick/hurt. Especially if you treat them like your kids.

My co-worker's weimeraner had growths similar sounding to what you described and they turned out to be allergic reactions of some kind. Now she gives her a regular dosage of benadryl (after having the initial growths removed) and hasn't had a problem since. Hopefully it is something harmless like this! Good Luck!
