Should the winner of the 08' British Open and PGA Championship get an asterisk?

* - Tiger did not enter

Update:

The question was more a joke than anything but I am surprised at how serious the answers are.

well how about the other ones he didn't play in

Nope. I think that the asterisk is a politically correct, incorrect depiction of skepticism. Some people just get mad because they say it was unfair that Barry used steroids or unfair because tiger has stronger arms or unfair because the refs interferred. The truth is, if you win, you win. No excuses. Ask Tiger. He has never made an excuse. And none of the players made an excuse when tiger beat the field by 8 in the beginning of this year. They just said he played better.

The asterisk is a journalism hero, and a nightmare for the fans of sports.

Tiger Woods entered the Masters. Do you put an asterisk next to Trevor Immelmen's name?

  • 1 decade ago

I get the joke. Everyone will ultimately know that Tiger did not play and the tournaments will know when the attendance, viewership and sponsorship and ad rates dwindle too!

On a side note when Tiger retires will they mark all subsequent wins as part of the Post-Tiger era? What about previous champs? Are they part of the Pre-Tiger era? Would there be a Nicklaus era? Palmer Era? Pre-War Era? Wood Shaft Era? Steroid Era? HGH Era? It could end up like baseball!

    God I hope not...

If thats the case this years winner at Augusta should get one too because Tiger did not enter. He was recovering from his surgery when the Masters was played. And what about all of the other tournaments Tiger has missed over the course of his career. Its a non issue really.

  • 1 decade ago

He came in second to Trevor Immelman at the Masters this year smarty...that was the last tournament BEFORE surgery. But no there shouldnt be an asterisk

  • 1 decade ago

If anything, Tiger should get an asterisk by his US Open victory.

*Won 19 hole playoff with broken shins.

    insane.

No. Injuries occur all the time. He didn't win the '07 British Open, Masters, or U.S. Open. He played in them though.
