My Recruiter Told Me I Scored Too High On The ASVAB To Be In Air Force Security Forces?

I scored a 70 on my ASVAB and my recruiter told me meps WOULD NOT give me a job as a security forces apprentice, as they need people with higher scores on technical jobs. Is this true? I stood my ground and told her every single reason why I want to be a security forces officer, however she still put the "open general" thing on the form they sent to meps. This is a six year commitment, I want to be doing something I enjoy, not randomly placed somewhere I'll be miserable. Every job is just as important in the military, and they all get the same pay... I don't see why it would be a problem getting a security forces job considering I'm over qualified and it's the largest career field in the air force, therefore more open to new members. Apparently they only want to employ the borderline retarded as cops. What do I do if meps really does tell me they wont send me to security forces tech school because I qualify for higher requirement jobs?

Update:

No, I'm not insulting the security forces. It's the job I want and I would take it very seriously, I however am upset with the recruiter's and the air force in general's view on the security forces. Telling someone that they are "too smart" to be security forces and that they only like giving that job to people with low test scores just doesn't seem right to me... how someone who is supposed to be a representative of the air force could undermine the people who let them sleep easy at night.

Dank and Mar are pretty much right on with their answers. Recruiters recruit and they have a list of AFSCs (jobs) that the Air Force is more critical for getting filled each month. 70 qualifies you for a number of jobs and so they probably are trying to get you to go into one of those while they at the same time can get someone with lesser scores go into the SF field. Stick to your guns and tell your recruiter that the Marine Corps will give you what you want and that may motivate them to go ahead and sign you up rather than lose you entirely. If you still don't get it talk with a different recruiter in another region or area of your state and I bet they will do it. I have seen this exact situation and is sometimes why people enlist from a different location than what they originally intended.

The best thing to do is say you haven't smoked pot, unless you have a police record saying otherwise. If it's not written down somewhere, it might as well not have happened, as far as the recruiters are concerned. Even though you admitted it to the marines, I doubt the air force would be able to access the part where you said you smoked 10 times. they would only know if you had been kicked out for smoking pot. I've had a similar situation which is keeping me from getting the MOS's I want (psychological operations, intel, MP), because I won't be able to get a high security clearance, because i smoked pot. Right now I'm going into the infantry, just to get in, then planning on trying to re-enlist into a better MOS if possible. You might want to consider going into 0300 for the Marines, then once in apply for a B billet job, Embassy Security Force.

You have to be commissioned to be an officer.

You can still sign up for that job, if your scored well. Just make sure that you are not going in open, and that Security Forces is on your contract.

If you are sure... *make sure you are sure because there are a LOT of kick-@ss jobs in the USAF, that require higher ASVAB scores, as well as $$$ for re-enlisted... like for the job I have, if I re-enlist, I get $50,000 bonus*...

Tell your recruiter you won't sign up. Or go to another recruiter and see what your options are.

And I don't suggest signing up for 6 years. If you DO want to continue in the USAF, then why not sign up for 4, and then re-enlist? If you get a bonus, you get it sooner. I know the hype is that you put on SrA 6 months sooner, it's really not that much extra money, and the rank really doesn't mean too much. It is always wisest to sign up for the least amount of time. Not a lot of newbies realize that.

This recruiter is full of it. Remind her that your score is high enough and you do qualify for this field and that there is no such thing as "over qualified". You want SF and if you do not get it then you are not going to enlist through her and will be getting in touch with Air Force Recruiting Service.

What he meant is that with your score you are better off in another career field. If you want SF go SF and insist on it. They did the same thing to me, I scored high on the electrical portion of the ASVAB and they wanted to put me in an electrical job. Don't let them tell you that there are no jobs for SF available, because there always looking for SF. This just sounds like total recruiter BS.

He's lying. They probably have a job in the Air Force that has a severe shortage that has to be filled immediately. You can't score too high for a MOS, you can only score too low for one.

Source(s): My cousin standing next to me was an Air Force recruiter that just ETS'ed 1 week ago.

If you get SF, you may find out that your fellow SF people are not the one's that you want to work with on a daily basis. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You don't get anything worth doing a six year commitment and getting E-3 after school isn't that good deal when reenlisting you get a bonus.

70 is not what would be considered to be an extremely high score. I think he is just trying to fill a different quota with you.

I would reconsider signing up. this is afterall you life. theoretically, they can place you wherever. but, if it's not even sounding like anything you'd be remotely interested or if this was the whole point of joining, i'd walk.
