boardermail.com - very simple email, but entirely free.
linuxmail.org - specifically for Linux users, but free.
mail.lycos.com - Lycos is well known, offers 3GB of storage and tons of others for free.

Greetings...
Don't forget that many of the messenger systems have email attached to them as well.
So be sure to include: AIM (which is aim.com, not to be confused with aol.com - also free); and ICQ (yep, it's still around, alive, and kicking... with free email).
