By "older folks" I'm assuming you mean those that are mature enough to respond politely, and as it looks my grammar beats out most of these other answerer's, so 16 is old enough IMO.

I'd have to say John Lennon's solo work, Nirvana, and maybe Bob Marley, but Nirvana and John's work being by far teh most influential.

The Beetles !!! As they grew as a band , their music expanded and took many different socially relevant turns, then when they disbanded, they all individually continued to heavily influence the music world.
