How do I set my default picture viewer in Windows XP. It was always Microsoft Pic Manager and is now Adobe???

My computer is now suggesting that Adobe is my picture viewer (by default??). Previously it was always Microsoft Office Picture Manager. When I double click on a picture on my computer, it gives me an error message. When I right click on the same picture and select "open" or "preview", it launches the picture properly. Can you help?

You have to go to Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Themes> Folder Options> File Types> Find the type of file you want to change> Click Change> Find the Program you want to use> Okay> Okay. Hope I helped! :-)

Many programs do not "play nice." When they install themselves, they want to be the default viewer, sound player, etc. So to stop that, go to My Documents [or anywhere else on C: for that matter], and find a file ending with the type you want to open with something else. For example, .pic, or .gif files [again, it doesn't matter]. Then RIGHT CLICK on that file, and in the menu which opens up choose OPENS WITH. Now it gets tricky: you may have to "browse" to the program you want if it is not among the choices it shows you. The program may be in Program Files, for example. Once you find it [either way], click on the little box in the menu which says "Always use...blah blah blah". Close everything.

Once in the blue moon you may have to reboot the machine at this point.

And that's how you do it. You can do this with any file type and any application capable of opening that file type.

    Good luck.
