Have you thought of the "gifts in a jar" that are so popular at Christmas time? They are usually inexpensive to fill with soup mixes, cake mixes, bread mixes etc. There are books available with recipes for everything from bread and muffins to spa treatments. I found one at the checkout stand at my local grocery store that even had preprinted tags. You will need large-mouthed canning jars with lids, basic kitchen ingredients and printed recipe cards. Usually the jars hold the pre-measured dry ingredients and the recipient adds things like eggs and water so storage should be easy. They should ship easy and they're not too pricey to make. My mom and I have made them for years for teacher gifts and everyone always loves them.
